So if I understand their definition of a supernode, an everyday users' computer can be elected a supernode? F that, I don't want to be a supernode.

Under normal circumstances, there are a large number of supernodes available. Unfortunately, today, many of them were taken offline by a problem affecting some versions of Skype. As Skype relies on being able to maintain contact with supernodes, it may appear offline for some of you.
What are we doing to help? Our engineers are creating new ‘mega-supernodes’ as fast as they can, which should gradually return things to normal. This may take a few hours, and we sincerely apologise for the disruption to your conversations. Some features, like group video calling, may take longer to return to normal.

Yea - This sucked for us. Entire company runs on Skype with people all over the world. Really makes it difficult to keep in communication when it was down. I'm still unable to connect.
There are registry changes you can make to disable your computer becoming a supernode. http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/security/universities/

I noticed the little skype icon on the desktop tray moving like something was loading, when I rolled the mouse over it, it popped up a dialog box saying "Skype is connecting". This was like it for at least a few hours and did not stop by the time i left to go home.
