Secured USB memory drive.

Hey guys. im trying to help my cousin find a better usb drive since the SanDisk he has, isn't to his expectations. He complains about cannot accessing the files from the USB and has to drag it into the computer to access it. He would like to access his files from within the USB drive. Any suggestions other than sandisk to try out?

Cliffs:
Cousin:Unhappy USB user
would like to access files from USB instead of dragging to desktop
SanDisk sucks in his opinion.

kingston is good, patriot xporter is also pretty good. No problems with either.

I haven't had an issue really with my scandisk drives. I usually plug them in and delete the crap software/bloatware that comes on it and it pops up on my Mac and windows without an issue.

Secured how, OP?

U3?

I recommend using Cryptainer or TrueCrypt on a USB device to create an encrypted partition.

Also, Sandisk has worked well for me...

stogie, i have no problems with sandisk, but apparently to my cousin, he doesn't like the fact that he has to drag the file out of the usb to access the file.

Thanks to everybody for the replies.

He's doing something wrong, then. I have 4 4gb Sandisk USB sticks (costco FTW) and I can open/edit files right on them...

Has he tried another brand/device in HIS computer to make sure there is nothing wrong with his machine?

I am not trying to be argumentative, but he may be associating a computer issue with Sandisk, rather than fixing the actual issue.

Also, if it's the U3 that is screwing him up, that can easily be removed...

Actually, in order to copy the file to his hard drive (what you call moving to his computer), he is accessing the file, at least the file system on the USB drive. A lot of USB drives come with a small switch that can make them read only. I would take a look to see if this might be the case.

Also, Sandisk is one of the top brands in the Flash memory market. I have several of their products in various forms, from xD, CF and USB and all have been rock solid.

It sounds like your cousin is suffering from frustration due to this problem, and needs to take a chill pill. Because quite frankly, this is probably a problem between the chair and the keyboard.

I know, but I know your cousin has some aversion to Sandisk so if it's off the table, it's off the table as an option... His loss, not mine.

So if I use Truecrypt to encrypt a flash drive and stick it in a machine that doesn't have truecrypt on it do I have to do anything special to access the files, like a truecrypt reader or is all that handled by on the flash drive and it's seamless.

Can I use a TrueCrypt protected external hard drive as a Time Machine backup drive?
