Republic Wireless

Any one interested in their service? Unlimited texts, calls, and data for $19 a month and no contracts. More info below:

They use UMA technology to prioritize their network through WiFi networks and switch off between cell towers and WiFi. Supposedly, they use Sprint's towers to fall back on when there's no WiFi networks so coverage shouldn't be all that bad although they emphasize WiFi a lot. You have to purchase the phone at the full price of $200 which is an LG Optimus running Gingerbread. More phones are coming, probably other Android phones but they don't specify. I believe the Galaxy S II has UMA tech but can't be for sure about that.

Not sure what the catch is but going through their site, there seems to be an excessive usage allotment that isn't clearly defined:

What is the Cellular Usage Index (CUI)?

It’s our geeky way to quantify your cellular footprint. We employ an index to normalize things in a world where texts use up a lot less cellular capacity than minutes. Your CUI is calculated using your last seven days of activity.

How much cellular usage is too much?

It depends. Even assuming 0% wifi usage, for example, you could consume 550 minutes, send 150 texts, and download 300 megabytes of data without crossing the community’s fair use threshold. Everyone's usage patterns will be different, but we're confident you’ll be amazed at how little cellular you actually use when you have a phone that makes it easy to leverage the power of your Wi-Fi networks.

So this isn’t really an unlimited plan?

It is in fact an unlimited plan. We’ll never charge you overages, limit your download speeds, or restrict you to calling circles. Hybrid Calling makes it easy to stay within the community’s fair use guidelines.

What happens if I use more than the suggested guideline?

First, you’ll be reminded of the guidelines and to what extent you’ve crossed the fair use threshold. We’ll provide you with tips for reducing your cellular footprint and plenty of opportunity to get back on track. When we contact you about your usage, we’ll let you know how much time you have to correct your problem.
I guess the service might be good for people who don't really use their phones to talk too much and is almost always around a WiFi source. Thoughts?
