.DS_Store ???
Anyone know what the deal is with this? Or how to get around this?
I'm trying to transfer my files from an external storage device (Mac OS Extended formatted) to my iMac (10.7.2). However, I keep getting this error message:
"The operation can’t be completed because the item “.DS_Store” is in use."

DS_Store is the hidden system file that keeps track of your folder view settings and icon placement for each folder.
If I were you I'd just unplug the drive and reconnect it and try again, that'd probably fix it....

If you're comfortable with the terminal, you can use the following... Need to replace the name of the volume (in this case /) with the actual volume name. May need some quotes around the volume name if there are spaces...
sudo find / -name ".DS_Store" -depth -exec rm {} \;
There are also GUI apps out there that will do the same thing. This is faster.

It's something quick and simple to try....

Looks like it's something other than an issue with .DS_Store.
Here's the story. I've had a MBP for just over a year. I recently copied all the photos from my MBP to an external hard drive. It's worked flawlessly so far. I just tried to transfer the contents of the HDD to my new iMac, and that's when I started to encounter the problem. At first, I thought it had something to do with the .DS_Store file. But then I checked the files itself, and I noticed that I couldn't even open the photos from the HDD through my iMac. Then I couldn't even eject the HDD from iMac.
Now I connected the HDD back to my MBP, and it works perfectly fine. So somehow the HDD can work fine with the MBP, but not the iMac??? Both the MBP and iMac were recently updated to Lion.

then connect the drive to your MBP and transfer the files to your iMac using air drop, your external drive might be dying...

Yeah, that was what I was planning on if I can't find another solution.
I really doubt my external drive is dying, since it is working perfectly fine. I've tried several times connecting and disconnecting between my MBP and iMac, and it's always the same. Somehow, the external drive just doesn't seem to recognize the iMac correctly.
