If you don't get an Apple, I'd purchase a Thinkpad... I've always been a fan of IBM's notebooks, maybe I'm just biased because the first notebook I had was a Thinkpad. However I have recommended them to three of my friends in college and they've all been very very happy with them. Too bad they are a bit of a drain on the wallet.

The problem with almost all of the WinTel laptop vendors is that their model lines are large and span the range from total pieces of crap to quite good. You can't just arbitrarily compare brands. You have to compare like models between brands.
Dell Home has a good deal on the Inspiron E1505 Dual Core laptop notebook for a good deal.
The base unit comes with a Intel Core Processor Duo T2300, 15.4" WXGA screen, 1GB DDR2, 100GB hard drive, 8x DVDRW, built in wireless, and a year warranty.
1. Go to ebay and buy a $35 off ( Search "dell home 35 300" )
2. Click here to see the laptop.
3. Click Continue, Continue, and Add to Cart
4. Instant Savings : -$475.00
5. Apply ebay $35 off $300 coupon.
Final Price : $664 + Cost of Coupons ( Around $2 )

I've owned a few Dell laptops and wont be buying another one. Older ones worked great but there new ones seem to have little annoying problems. I'm a fan of the Toshiba Satellite notebooks at the moment.
Has anyone tried Parallels Deskop on an Intel mac yet? It looks really cool. I'm looking for real world opinions.
