I'm looking for a color all-in-one printer, including fax.

Requirements in addition to above:
- wireless
- double-sided printing (not necessarily full-duplex)
- can print in black only (i.e. not use color ink when printing black)
- can still print when one or more ink cartridges are empty.
- scan to PDF (should be pretty standard)
- somewhat compact - not ahuge office machine
- ~$300 or less

Any suggestions?

I saw an HP Photosmart C7250 at Costco for $180, but it cannot print black only and will not print if any ink cartridges are empty or missing.

 

A few more requirements:
- auto-document feeder
- separate ink cartridges for each color

5 color printing preferred, but not required.

I researched the Canon Pixmas with a document feeder(they were more highly rated than the HPs), but realized I didn't really need one since the 4-year old Lexmark all-in-one I have works fine, although it doesn't have a doc feeder. The Lexmark has multi-color and black cartridges, but works fine printing docs in black w/o using the color cartridge or if the color cartridge is empty/has been pulled. IDK if the Canons operate with the color cartridge pulled/empty.

The Canon Pixmas are very good. Not only is their ink less expensive than HP's, the cartridges contain more ink and provide better quality prints compared to HP models in the same price range. Also, Canon has had the best customer satisfaction rating for their printers in a recent survey I believe.

They didn't sell any wireless models at Circuit City when I used to sell stuff in their computer department though so can't give ya much advice there, but they do have duplex and wireless printers out there made by Canon.

I just picked up a Canon Pixma MX700. It's a network printer, just not wireless. I figure it's not that big a deal to run it from my router. I'll still be able to print from a wireless laptop anyway. Got it last week for $80 after rebate (originally 199). You can find it at most places for ~130.

 

I've heard that Lexmarks are ink hogs, so they're out.

The Canons actually look pretty good. The only thing they are missing is the wireless. I'm trying to avoid needing a wireless print server (USB adapter) for the printer, but I'm going to look into these a bit more.

After dealing with HP online support last night, I found they don't have anything that meets my needs.

Any other suggestions?

 

Pretty much any printer can be made wireless with a print server that would attach to your wireless router, correct?

I just installed a HP C6280 for my sister (wired ethernet installation).

 

I have the HP Officejet 7410. Was ~$500 when we first picked it up bout 1.5 years ago. Price might be close.

 

Yes, for ~$100 for the wireless printserver.

I'm sure the HPs are pretty good, but the inability to print using only black ink is a major drawback. Maybe not a deal killer, since I would be using the mono-laser for most B&W prints.

I've read good things about the MX850 (replacement for mp830). Newegg has it for 220+tax (CA). Just need to find a decent wireless print server to go with it.

More than a year later and still haven't made a purchase. We'll be scanning a lot more documents, so the manual feeding is getting tiresome.

Any recommendations based on more recent experiences?

If you'll ever need to scan legal size documents, make sure the mx860 will do it. I know my mx700 does not.

 

A Canon Pixma MX860 is on its way to my house as we speak.

 

No regular need for legal sized scanning, or printing for that matter.

Neteditor - I was thinking about waiting for your review, but decided to order one from Newegg. They had an extra $20 off if you subscribe to their newsletter, so that more than offset the tax (Damn CA taxes). Should have it by Monday.

 

I just wanted to say how much Newegg rocks. I ordered from them after checking pricegrabber, but before checking Amazon. Amazon had it for quite a bit cheaper so I called Newegg to cancel - even though the payment had been charged and they don't allow cancellations after that. They said they would price match based on the difference I stated. I was actually off by $10 in their favor plus tax, but with a $20 discount it worked out about the same.

It beats having to deal with RMAs and all that.

Got an xerox phaser. Terrible. To make the thing work right, xerox wants me to pay them hundreds for software that does not come with it. Scans look horrible. Prints fast seems like about 20 ppm color. I always like canon

It actually arrived yesterday (next day since newegg is less than 50 miles away ) and I installed it on the network and one computer. The network installation wasn't too bad, but was a little more complicated for me since I also added WPA to the network after installing the printer via wireless. Now I just need to add the software and encryption to the other computers.

Haven't tested the print quality yet, but used the scanner and transfered the PDFs over wireless. So far so good.

 

+2 i upgraded to a Canon Pixmas last year and have been very happy with it.
