rant about mp3 phone technology

ok - this is a new Sony Ericsson Walkman phone coming out. Why do they continue to put the headphone plug in an awkward and inconvenient place???? It should just be a STRAIGHT NORMAL 1/8th" jack coming STRAIGHT OUT OF THE TOP OF THE PHONE!!!! Not that bulky adapter thing at the bottom!?!?! How obvious is this??? I just can't believe they are STILL making phones like this.... when is technology design going to progress past such TRIVIAL things like this SIMPLE design concept??? Especially given that this phone wants to be a "Walkman" phone - it needs to be designed so it can be placed in your pocket and not feel awkward and/or bulky and/or uncomfortable - the headphone jack NEEDS to be designed like how they are on MP3 players!!! GOD. I know it probably means having an extra jack at the top of the phone - seeing how they typically like using the data port at the bottom for the same purpose - fine - that's what they need to do to start making PROGRESS with these mp3 phones!!!!

I have one good thing to say about it though - THANKS for providing what seem to be ACTUALLY USABLE earphones... they appear to be of the Sony EX71SL flavor...

Well on some Nokia's FM Radio can only be utilized when a Headset is plugged in, and you will notice the headset is made from the bottom similar to that phone above, and not a normal 1/8 Hole because the Headset is designed in a way to use as a Antenna too for the FM Radio.

Also there is a guy who did a conversion for his K750i on Howard Forums, where he made the plug convert into a normal Headphone jack

they don't do it, cuz then you can buy other peoples headphones, instead of being stuck with the corp branded ones they would like you to use

You can buy and use other headphones with this design. Check the pic - there is a break in-between the wire, EX71SL style (which I don't like - the old EX71's were better than the new ones, both in-terms of design and sound - but that is an entirely separate issue). But in any event, that's fine if they want you to use some proprietary headphones, they can still build that into a convenient plug location on the phone - at the top, and just build some extra side plug into it that allows for remote operation or what-not...

Think about how damn far we are with modern technology. There is NO REASON any "new" phone should have to be designed with this style of plug. Whatever reason people can give to support this design, I can think of a better way. Fine, keep the data part at the bottom so you can dock the phone iPod style or whatever - that's fine. JUST GIVE ME A GODDAMN HEADPHONE JACK ON TOP!!!!! /rant part deux

I see your frustration. But I think it's designed that way because if you look at it carefully those headphones are not only for the walkman part but they are also so that you can use it as an earpiece while talking on the phone.

^^^ that's fine. but I want a separate headphone jack on top.

watch. they'll do it in the future for mp3 phones... separate data port at the bottom, headphone jack on top.

Yeah, what he said. I agree with you that it's in a bad spot, but what about the mic that's integrated into the headphones? But yeah, they probably will come out with something that makes more sense and we'll all wonder why they didn't do that sooner.
