Question about Verizon Fios Internet Speeds???

So i'm moving to an area that verizon fios is available in. I'm going to be getting the double play but what i'm wondering is, is there much of a difference between the 15mbs/5mbs and the 25mbs/25mbs internet speeds? is it worth dropping the extra $15 a month on??

Depends on what you "do" on the interweb.

If you call paypal, and let them know about the double play deal, they can further discount the monthly payment.

The extra $15 also gets you free access to all of their hotspots that are out and about, plus you get more TV channels. I pay for the 25 and get 35 to 40 most of the time.

It's a trap. The lower the number, the faster your speeds. Too many people fall for this trick. Don't let it happen to you. Don't pay for slower speeds!!!

Charter runs Ultra 60... tried it and can not tell a real difference in their MAX plan at 25mpbs. Of course it's $40 more a month to jump to 60 Ultra.

You would only notice it if you had someone watching high-definition videos over Netflix, a kid watching high quality Youtube videos and then you decide YOU want to use the internet as well.

Otherwise I don't think most people will ever touch 60 mbps.

What's strange is that I get blazing download speed on the 25 MAX plan, but slow upload speeds.

Agreed. One has to remember that he average server you are getting the data from is only giving you 3-5 Mbps anyway. So if you are downloading movies, AND downloading 14 songs, AND playing an online game, AND downloading torrents, AND uploading the flight program to the next shuttle mission, then and only then would you even want the higher tier. To me the mid tier is more than enough. I have downgraded and never saw a difference.

BTW my 4G Verizon smartphone (Thunderbolt) is faster than my internet land line

I've got the 25/25 plan. Although the speeds are good, tested at 20/20 most of the time, I don't find it coincidental that my speeds magically reduce every time I stream netflix and netflix says they have to convert my video to a lower quality.

Verizon

I'm not sure who to blame for poor streaming in the evening. Netflix/youtube, or fios?

I Pay for the 15/5 plan

I test at 21dn/6up

I Stream Netflix all day long, large downloads, etc etc. I push it to the limit and it has never flinched. No video game lag, no netflix lag nada.

Go for it.

the higher the better, but like others said...is it worth it to you?

my girlfriend will be downloading itunes, i'll be playing COD on xbox live, and my brother might be streaming netflix downstairs.

to me, the extra money is well spent. my connection speed is important to me. i hate lag.

If you can spare the extra 15 dollars, go for it. I have a 40-50/15 Mbps connection and it's quite a bit faster with FTP and file transfers than my old 20-30/5 Mbps was.

The funny thing is before when I'd FTP files I'd be downloading at 500Kbps but with the new connection (still over copper) I'm at almost 1.1Mbps. Perhaps it's the new modem that's required for it or perhaps its just the benefit of having a bit more bandwidth.

You live in Jersey right?

My issue with this dilemma is that it happens to me anytime of the day, which is why I think it is a FIOS thing. When Netflix first begins it's test to determine my speed it says I have 4 bars, great connection, begins steaming at high quality and then about 15-30 seconds into whatever I'm watching it comes back saying my internet connection speed had changed and that they need to lower the quality. Me thinks it's Verizon throttling my speed to want me to use their on demand and make it seem like Netflix is crappy. One of these days net neutrality is going to bite them in the a$$

I've got fios 15/5. Here's what I'm getting:

I stream videos (netflix, redtu, I mean youtube, etc), play FPSs, download large files, upload large files (photos) and I've had a total of absolutely zero outages in almost 2 years. I'd say given my experience the extra $15 isn't worth it if all it gets you is faster speed. If it gets you additional channels, etc, then maybe.

With FIOS you do get more channels when you get a faster tube. You also get free access to their WiFi network that a lot of retail places use.

I had Verizon dsl from around 2004 to 2005ish..

then went to "fios" because it was so wonderful yeah right!!! Didn't notice much "diff" if any, upgraded once or twice up until they sold out to Frontier 6months ago.

Now I'm with Comcast and love it.. Landline makes noise but Who uses landline anyways
