IT: Good Home Wireless Access Point

Any recommendations? It doesn't need to have routing capabilities as I have a separate router (Cisco 871 ).

Browsing Newegg and this caught my eye:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833168060

It doesn't do N, but it supports PoE, comes with a power injector, and is only ~$50. I could mount it near the center of my attic...

I have been very happy with my Cisco-Linksys WRT320N, although I run DD-Wrt on it.

What range are you looking to have?

Mmm...something that'll cover a 1400 sq. ft. single story home plus attached 2 car garage and small back yard.

I like the idea of something that I can mount in the attic (like what I linked to above). I can put it almost dead center of the house.

Apple Airport Extreme. I've installed Linksys's, Netgear's, D-link's, Zyxel's and others, and I've never found anything that can compare to the quality and reliability of the Airport Extreme. They're probably one of the best consumer level routers out there. And yes, they do work with PC's. The WiFi network is a wireless standard and doesn't change from PC to Apple. The configuration utility (Airport Utility) is also included for PC.

*edit* My statement is only referring to the consumer level routers. There are much higher performing routers out there that are business grade. Although I have used a lot of Airport Extreme's in businesses.

Do you think there would be an issue with heat in the attic? If not and if you really want something in the attic then go for it.

FWIW I can transmit my entire house and get to my backyard no problem with a poorly located WRT54G. I'm around 2,500 sq. ft. 2 story. Going to N would give even more range.

^ Well, the one I referenced is an outdoor WAP, so I'd assume it'd be able to handle the attic heat ok. I'd never mount an indoor WAP in the attic, lol. The only downside is it doesn't do N.

I'm tempted to try the one I found. It's the "EnGenius EOC1650 802.11b/g Outdoor Wireless AP/Bridge" as seen here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833168060

It seems to have pretty good reviews (Googled around), and it's only $58 from Newegg after tax and shipping. If all the wireless devices I have supported N, then maybe, but since some don't I'd still need a 2.4GHz network (or a dual radio WAP, but I don't want to spend a lot of money), and the G devices would slow the network down (in a non-dual radio environment) when they are active anyway.

Hmm...

Thunder, I run the above Linksys at about 1/2 to 2/3 power in a 1900 SqFt house (mounted center-side of house on living floor) and get very good coverage ALL over house and yard. Measured with Android Wifi apps. If I set it to full power, it would be redonculous.

Running Zyxel NBG419N, wireless router/access point for over a year now. B/G/N. Works great in 3K sq ft house (in my office at midpoint in house), including back deck and basement. Dirt cheap at Buy.com, got it for $35.48 including shipping.

Running 3 wireless cams, wireless printer, 2 wireless laptops, hp laserjet network printer (cable) and NAS (cable).

I am using a NetGear WNDR3300 with DD-WRT with the tx at 150 and it gets everywhere in the house and yard. Basement to the attic. 2500 sq ft house. The router is on the second story, but not in the center. And, it's easy enough to setup another dd-wrt router as a repeater if you need more coverage.

I've had the Apple Airport Extreme for almost a year and no problems at all, the routers I've had before (Netgear and Linksys) tend to start having problems after the first year, mostly needing to be powered on and off every few days to work properly.
