Question about a printer

I bought an HP color laser printer today to print up brochures, fliers, and other business related stuff. I bought a model that I believe is a few years old. It was on sale, and $200 cheaper then it normally is. The next model up was $300 more and the only real difference I could see was that it duplexed. It had the same specs for the most part. Now I have it connected via ethernet to my network. It pauses between each page, and with at least one document (a word document that is a brochure), it takes over a minute at least to spool. Is this latency caused by the network connection or is this just really that slow of a printer. I would like to speed it up if I can while keeping it on the network.

Uncheck spool jobs in Printer settings.

I think I decided to take this one back. It only prints 8 ppm color and I need something faster. Would you recommend something over an HP? I used to love HP printers, but several years ago they decided to go away from making decent products and instead make some pretty crappy stuff. Not to mention I can't stand their support now. If I have to go with a HP I will, but wondering if there is a better option.

Price range? Features you need? Print volume per week or month? # of users?

Lexmark use to make their printers. Not sure about now, but probably still the same since their cartridges are pretty similar

I'd like to keep it no more then $500, maybe stretch to $600. I would like as fast as possible, especially with color prints. I would like as high resolution as possible as I might also use it to print some of my digital pics, but this is definitely the least important. I also need network printing as it's location makes it difficult to physically connect to the computer. I will mainly be the only user, and will print up to several thousand letters, flyers, and brochures a month.

A $500-$600 laser won't be that great (from what I've seen) for digital print outs vs. an inkjet.... resolution's just not high enough.

The HP laser you had probably only had a 600x600 resolution.

If you want something better (higher res, faster speed, lower operating cost), take a look at the Lexmark C544n (or C544dn if you need duplexing).

For $399, it's a great deal

Its funny you suggest that unit. I went back this morning, returned the HP and got the Lexmark C543DN. I have to see what the difference is. This one claims 1200x1200 compared to the 600x600 of the HP, is faster at 21 PPM, and adds duplexing. I have printed some brochures and flyers on both and have to say the HP looked a tad better even though it is less resolution. This printer is a lot faster though and the duplexing is nice.

Yup. I actually went to get a couple quotes, when they came back in the neighborhood of $2300 I decided maybe I'll just go buy a printer and paper and do it myself. They were charging in the area of $.69 per side for the brochures.

YMMV. I say otherwise.

Their ink management system is hands down the worst in the industry. I'm not sure that's debatable.

Yup, I factored for roughly the same amount of prints. With the printer, ink, and paper, it will cost me about $1400-$1500 less to do it myself. I spend a little more time, but I've just been printing them off at night. Also, the quality of the prints at the shops weren't as great as I thought they would be. To keep the cost DOWN to $2300 they used a lighter weight paper then what I bought myself. The brochures came out looking kinda cheap and, ironically, home made. Where the ones I printed look professional. Trust, I was shocked as I was certain going into it that the print shops would have been of much better quality. They probably would be with higher quality paper, but the costs would have been even more.
