question about the I-Phone & Wi-Fi

I'm considering getting an Iphone and just wondering about it's wi-fi capabilities.

If I connect to say, my home network with my Iphone, will I incur any internet charges on my cell phone bill?

In other words will Cingular (err.. AT&T) somehow know that I am connected to my home network with the I-phone

Hey there is no reason why you would get charged browsing with your iphone via your home network. The iPhone will automatically use wifi if available there for bypassing your ATT edge service.

Oh, if i were you i would by an iphone and jailbreak it to avoid signing up with att for 2 years or whatever their current plan is

The answer is no. But be aware that as soon as you step out of wifi range, it'll go back to Edge. Although if you have unlimited internet, it shouldnt be a problem.

Thanks guys. I bought an iphone Tuesday, but returned it yesterday. I did like the phone itself, but it was just too darn restrictive in terms of how you had to use Itunes for EVERYTHING, even to "delete" files. It also really sucked that there was no buetooth file transfer service. I did however like the wi-fi, youtube and google maps, but the simple stuff was left out. I assumed that this stuff would be on the phone, but I just made an ass out of u and me.

I was going to jailbreak it, but by the time I decided that I wanted to do that, I had already upgraded to the 1.1.3 firmware and it didn't seem that there was a proven method to jailbreak it. If I hadn't upgraded from 1.1.2 then I would probably still have the phone since I could have easily jailbroke it then and added some of the 3rd party apps that would probably have given me more freedom. I think MobileFinder is what I needed to install in order to manage files without the hassle of syncing with iTunes all the time.

Oh well, I'm without a phone again, and honestly don't really see any phone I would consider spending money on at the moment. Another iphone is not out of the question, I'll just be sure that IF I do get another one, that it is already jailbroken or at minimum still has the 1.1.2 firmware.

You can def. jailbreak a 1.1.3. I have unlocked 8 fw 1.1.3 so i know you can jailbreak it but honestly i dont love the iphone. 1.1.3 also doesnt seem to have the 3rd app support that 1.1.2 does anyway

yeah, if I were to get another one, I would definetely want the 3rd party app support. Even if its just an app that allows me to delete photos, music, and other files without having to sync through stupid iTunes all the time.

Not being able to do that and no bluetooth file transfer option is a big minus in my book.

Yea, but is that a lockdown feature of ATT? I know Verizon does this.

I'm pretty sure this was Apple's decision to intentionally leave this feature out of the phone. On all my other phone's I've had with Cingular/ATT (locked and unlocked), I've been able to transfer files via bluetooth and also through a USB connection without having to go through a software app like itunes.

There's an app that supposively lets you swap files over wifi among different iphones/itouches in radius...I saw it a while back on installer....if I can get through all the menus and find it again I'll let you know...I've added just about all the sources so it takes forever for me to find stuff now.

There's so many programs on the list
