Outlook 2007 w/ Cached Exchange mode issue
So we recently upgraded our company to Office 2007 and overall I would say it went pretty well. We are now having an issue with a few users while in Outlook, their mail folders and calendar do not update. You can click Send/Receive and it will say completed, but new email would not come through. In the bottom right of Outlook it would show Connected to Microsoft Exchange and have This folder was last updated at x:xx time. This time would either be early in that day or sometime the previous day.
So my first thought was just maybe something got messed up with the mail profile on the PC. So I deleted the mail profile and had the user log off and log back on. (Our mail profiles are created during login) Once logged back in, Outlook opened up with the normal message that it's setting up for first time use. All mail did download to the OST and we tested sending/receiving and all seemed well at the time. Few hours later, I get a call that it stopped updating.
The thing that is unique with these users is that they all have access to an additional mailbox (the same mailbox). So I tested with one of the users by removing this mailbox from their profile and seeing what happens. Without having this additional mailbox, everything works fine. So i'm thinking something is up with this mailbox. Tried this on another user, same thing without this mailbox all is good. The users need to have access to this mailbox all day, so removing it from them is not really an option.
The weird thing is, if I take them out of cached exchange mode and add that mailbox back in everything works fine. They get their emails and can see other calendars.
So has anyone every seen where you add an additional mailbox for someone (in cached exchange mode) and they stop receiving/sending emails/being able to see other calendars?
I hope this made some type of sense to someone

The only time these users stop receiving emails is when you add the second mailbox to their Outlook clients? This doesn't make sense since you're still in the same domain. Also, when you had recreated their mail profile, what happened to their OST file? Did it get deleted or does it get overwrited when it was recreated?
Also, why do they need to be in "Cached Exchange Mode"? Do these users have laptops and they like to check their emails while offline? If not, you're creating more work for yourself. Take them off and problem solved.

How big is their mailbox? If their OST gets too big (over a couple gigs) there tends to be problems. Maybe archive some of their mail and see if that helps.

Try not opening the mailbox in the same mail profile. Create one mail profile with their mailbox and then another with the shared mailbox, see if that works....I haven't seen this issue, but seen issues like this with Blackberry.

Unfortunately, if you have Vista users, the desktop search seems to really want Outlook running in cached Exchange mode.

Update:
I didn't really get to dedicate a lot of time today to get into this, hopefully more next week.
So, these users are NOT in Cached Exchange mode right now until I can do further testing.
If I have one mail profile for the user and create another for the shared mailbox it works fine. This does not work too well for the user though as they constantly need to drag and drop items in folders between the two mailboxes.
I tried using the scanost.exe that was mentioned in the link before and that seemed to work for a moment, but as soon as you close and reopen Outlook it would go right back to "this folder was last updated at x:xx" Scanost.exe did not report any errors.
The shared mailbox is about 3gig. They have cleaned out the mailbox as much as they can, but it cannot go any lower. They have items that they must keep for at least a year. Maybe we can archive some of those after 3-6months??
When I recreated the mail profile it did overwrite the OST. I also tried just deleting the OST and then recreating the mail profile. Same thing.
It's definitely the shared mailbox. I can add that mailbox to any user and it will break it instantly.
We have been on Exchange 2007 for about a year or so. Have always used Cached Exchange mode without any problems (until now). I'm thinking it has to be some conflict with Outlook 07, because everything worked fine while in Outlook 03. Cached Exchange mode was used in Exchange 2003 too.
