New computer help

Hmm the main comp for the family is near dead. Me and my brothers play computer games and my parents surf the web and use it for media purposes. So anyways what is the best brand of computers for the most value. I'm looking to build a system with these specs
2.0 ghz dual core intel or higher
2gb of ram
256mb of video ram or more
250gb harddrive
No need for monitors or printers we already have those. And I don't want it to be to expensive as in not over 1500. I was thinking either HP or Gateway. Or even Ibuypower or other gaming computer specialization companies. So what is the best brand for these specs.

i'd go with asus motherboards.. im planning to built a comp and get a sli deluxe am2 motherboard with a AMD 4200+ X2 cpu.. then at least 2gb of 3200 ram (not sure which brand yet). and vid card im still debating which one but it seems you get the basics

building one from the ground up won't be hard at all. if you really want... you can keep your case and powersupply and cd drives and what not. all you need to get is a vid card of your choice, new motherboard and some rams. if your hardrive is fried, then one of those as well. as for putting them together.. the only problem i can see you bumping into is connecting to mobo to the case and the cpu to the mobo. if you ask around or look online.. im sure theres tutorials to do it safely. good luck

Motherboard/PSU probably won't work with the current case if it's a Dell POS or something. A lot of their parts are proprietary.

Better off building one yourself. Its really not difficult, and you get superior hardware much cheaper than retail (such as buying a Dell POS or other.)

Um opposite for me Dell sucks and is overpriced. However HP has good prices but the reliability is so so. My HP notebook broke last year and they didn't even diagnose the problem the1st time. Oh well. I still have time and I'm sure I could build one myself when I have time. I know my dad doesn't have the patience or tech skills to build one from the ground up.

Oh and the comp that is dieing is a sony vaio made in like june of 2003. So its 4 years old, and one of the fans is almost dead. The specs are so outdated to
Pentium 4 3.06ghz hyperthreading
1gb of ram
100gb harddrive
64mb of video ram

Your old laptop is better than my desktop

I to agree with Dell (only with coupons), or ibuypower, especially with your budget.

Yea coupons work, I don't know I would like a kick ass gaming rig but theres no rush right now to get a new comp. So I may wait till the summer and build one or order one.

srk85 building pcs can be a little nerve wreaking the first time you do it. but dont let that stop you the ONLY downside to building your own pc is that you have to buy all your software (technically) which can be expensive. also i tell everyone who wants to build a pc to start with the motherboard you cant build a good system without a good mother bord and the motherbord dictates all of your compatibility as far as hardware is concerned. i love building pcs its fun to me also if you dont know about newegg.com you should check it out they have a huge selection and id say about 90 percent of the time they have the best deal i always reccomend this site since i use it so often for just about all my electronic needs
