Need some help on 19" and 20" LCD Monitors

I was looking to buy a 19 or 20" LCD Flat Panel Monitor.

These were the two I had in mind, both from Dell

Dell 20 inch

Dell 19 inch

Can anyone who knows about flat panel monitors tell me which one is better? I like the 20 inch because it has a higher resolution and a .255 dot pitch as opposed to the 19 which has a .300.

Thanks.

waaait a minute... Whose the one with the Bimmer? Yeah I know it's a lot of money. I have a 19 inch CRT at home but it's huge and takes up too much space. Furthermore, it has some lines going up and down the monitor that I can't stand anymore. I always have a bunch of windows open and I would love to have a nice big monitor.

Shiiiot, a 20" LCD?

That's gotta be the same as 24" CRT monitor! I used to have a 19" CRT monitor as well but "downgraded" to a samsung 151V 15" LCD and haven't regretted it since. Generally, the larger the LCD, the lower the picture quality, and I heard Dell's had lousy performance when it comes to LCDs. I think a 17" LCD would be comparable in size with your current 19" CRT.

I was thinking about going for the 19". I also found a Samsung 19" LCD. It was rated #1 by pcworld. I read somewhere that if an LCD has a resolution of 1600x1200, and you use it at a lower resolution, you will lose picture quality. I think I might just go with the 19.

Thanks,

Yes, LCD's have a native resolution they like to run in. Anything lower results in the image degrading.

I too am in the market for a good LCD, but Im still not convinced that they are better than CRTs in terms of clear playback on DVDs and video games.

When LCDs surpass CRTs in this area, Im definitely getting one.

Oh yeah - good choice on the Dell 19. My friend has one and it rules.

I've had an NEC 17" LCD for over a year now and it has performed flawlesly even on the most hard core 3D games.

Make sure the LCD monitor has digital hookup as this will improve the pic even more. Need a video card with DVI out as well..obviously.

JoNight,

My Dell 20 inch that I bought is absolutely gorgeous, far better than my Samsung SyncMaster 2100NF...Far better. Games look the same at any res as they did before, but the picture in windows (I used to run at 16x12 with the Samsung too) text is clean crisp, I have no adjustment issues, this monitor can do that itself (dunno if its casue of the DVI or what) and no color issues while the thing warms up...its just awesome. That Samsung ran me $600 2-3 years ago, around a few months after it came out. It has the Sony AG tube or a similar one.

Edit: And I ran the Samsung with BNC's not DSUB...it look(ed) way better with the BNC's.

Well I'm glad your happy with your purchase. Personally, I've never seen a Dell so I can't judge it personally, I just hear these things. Also, I don't think its fair to compare an LCD that was made 2-3 years ago to any LCD created today. But damn, 20 inches... :wow:

As for the picture quality issue, my only complaint with my monitor is that the colours in some of my digital camera photo's look a bit washed out, but other than that, it's amazing. At first I was going to return it cause I didn't like the whole "LCD" look, but now I find when I look at a regular monitor, the image doesn't seem as sharp. Also, if you do take the plunge, be sure to use the ClearType option for text, otherwise I find that text looks too jagged.

Yes, cleartype is key...as far as the SyncMaster, that was a CRT.
