I own one and its fast, has lots of features and is well built.

For another 50 dollars, you get 512 megs of RAM.

Umm no, an Athlon is from AMD. A Celeron is a stripped Pentium III I believe with a smaller cache.

The laptop I currently have is an Athlon XP mobile.

No I was asking if Athlon is like a Celeron from AMD.. Cuz I know Celerons suck cuz low cache and they are useless..

Athlon is not a celeron, it competes with the Pentium. The AMD Duron competes with the celerons.

AMD's processors are "slower" in terms of Mhz but they are more efficient, so when you get an AMD processor that says "Athlon XP 2000+" its the equivalent of an Intel that is a 2.0 ghz, even though the AMD processor might be 1600 mhz.

Why? Nothing will support it (unless you put Linux on it), Windows 64-bit won't be out until December at the earliest.

Plus they're all very expensive, heavy machines that will have no battery life and make a lot of heat/noise without any real world benefits (until later)

If you want a 64-bit machine, save your money and buy it later for FAR less.

Well, I'll be honest, I've owned Dell computers since 1997 and they're getting worse. Their tech support is awful too.

The Dell laptops have been nothing but trouble. I'm telling you, that link about I gave you is the best laptop for $1000 and has all the stuff you're looking for. I did a lot of research before buying it and I'm 110% happy with it.

Now, if you want to spend more, there are better choices for sure. Are you going to be doing hardcore 3-D gaming? Do you really need Windows XP pro? Home edition has 99% of the same stuff for less. I doubt you'll miss the encryption features and a few other worthless things.

I'm surprised about people hating Dell...over the past couple years or so, all I have been hearing is how great the Dell laptops are. My aunt just bought one and it is awesome. Also, I have a Dell desktop at school and a Dell desktop at home. I haven't had any problems with each...and I have had both for about 4 years combined.

I had a gateway before the Dells and pretty much anything that could have gone wrong with it did. Never EVER going back to gateway again. Terrible tech support. Dell's tech support isn't great, but it is 10x better than Gateways.

Get winxp pro if you know how to use it. i like pro because well...im (almost) mcse and it helps using it. And why are people all aobut this 64bit processor? Let software support it first.

First look at what you're going to use the laptop for. You dont need the latest and greatest if a.) you also use a desktop and have a powerful one or b.) you wont use all that power on the laptop. Personally I like having a thin light laptop that i can carry around. I REFUSE to buy a heavy one right now.

When are those new Dothan Centrino chips coming out?

You said you dont want to play games on it, yet you still want a 64MB dedicated graphics card?

you are not really being specific enough in what you want. There are basically three factors for laptops:

1) size/portability
2) speed
3) price

Figure out what is a priority first before determining what you want, considering how many options there are for laptops.

He mentioned regular usage. The computers i've suggested have the following

4.2 pounds
cost $1000 or so
5 hours of battery life
Athlong XP-M 2000+
have 802.11 G wireless
512 megs of RAM
40 gigs of hard drive space
Windows XP home or Pro

Basically overkill for anything except 3-D gaming.

Save yourself some money. You can get EXCELLENT laptops for under $1200 that will be more than enough.

As for Centrino's, they're a big marketing ploy. I dislike Intel these days.

Apple Powerbook has 1.33GHz PowerPC G4 and 1.5GHz PowerPC G4, how are these compared Intel?

is 1.5 GHZ G4 like Intel M 1.7GHZ? (faster than 2.5GHZ P4)?

Better for you perhaps. Its about your budget and what you'll do with it.

BTW, Apple does have good tech support, i give them BIG credit for that.

Yes, that's about it. The PowerPC chips in Macs run natively at significantly higher speeds than Intels and when they're running apps specifically designed for OSX they're not only fast but incredibly smooth. Can't wait to scrape up the $$ I need for a new one!

True.....Just about all Macs are higher priced than Windows machines.....the "Porsche of the computer world" as PC Monthly put it.

The other good things about Macs is...nowhere near the number of worms and viruses to worry about. Most hackers just ignore us.
