Need Help Deciding on a Good Laptop

I was leaning more towards the Inspiron 600M, I dont want to spend more than $1200 Max, but I want everything, There was a great deal on SlickDeals.net few weeks back, it was $942 for a $1200 system, but I believe Dell Emailed and Cancelled Everyones order, as the price was toooo cheap..

Anyways I love Inspirons and Have a inspiron 8000 myself and I love there support, wouldnt go with any other company, but I know IBM Thinkpads are more durable, and I would rather get those, but I want something light and not too expensive.

But I definitely cannot get a 600m, Might sound stupid, but I cannot live without a TrackPoint, touchpads dont do it for me, I have both on my current Inspiron 8000.

Also I had another question, I heard end of last year or beginning of this year, there were supposed to be new Dothan or something chips coming out that had Double the L2 Cache at 1 MB, but I have yet to find out if any laptops carry those chips or if they ever came out. Thanks a lot you guys

Good luck finding one. I just bought an Inspiron 5150 to use both at work and home, and in my search I don't remember seeing any laptop with a pointing stick. Even IBM and Toshiba, two of the last hold-outs, seem to have abandoned them.

Dell offers trackpoints on their Latitude series laptops, i.e. a similar model to compare with the 600M would be the Latitude D600. However, the video card is only a 32MB ATI compared to the option of getting 64MB on the 600m.

And in reference to your cache question, the Latitude notebooks are offered with Pentium M 735 (1.7Ghz), 745 (1.8Ghz), and the 755 (2.0Ghz), all of which have 2MB of L2 Cache.

I actually bought a 600M half a year ago; it cost me 1800 with the 2 year warranty. So far, I love it but the only problem is the left wrist pad can become somewhat hot. It irritates me with prolonged use.

I want something small, Not big like the 5150, maybe D600 is my best bet, Let me check it out, I dun like buying Generic Companies like Averatec, as there quality and finish would not be par and there support and stuff wouldnt be as good.

I have to admit its good looking and Thin as hell.

O and Its more of a Desktop Replacement for me, I need lots of Ram, but I will get low ram and upgrade it later, I will get CD-RW for now and upgrade to DVD-RW if I feel the need for it. I need at least a 15 in screen, as I am used to those, but it seems if you want small size factor u have to get 14 in, so thats all I gotta live with.

AND A TRACKPOINT IS A MUST.

I wanted 64 MB Video Ram as I play games often too, but it seems D600 does not offer that.
