if you don't have a spare computer to install it on or you can't partition your drives for dual-booting....try one of the "live" cd distros.
download teh iso, burn to cd, then just boot your machine off teh cd and you are good to go.

if your gonna use it for work, i'd recommend Redhat or Suse as alot of enterprises are starting to push it. 80% of security appliances firewall/ids run off some flavor of redhat linux.
Instead of Knoppix, I can also hook you up w/ VMware so you can do an actual install. I also have a bunch of dummies and advanced linux books.
I actually teach a RHCE class too
Try this:
Get a box w/ decent memory (over 1gb) get dual monitors, run the LInux CBT or any kind of ebook on 1 monitor then on the 2nd monitor run VMware w/ full blown linux.

I set out to do the same as you. I purchased a cheap deall SC420 like this one so that I had a dedicated machine to learn/play with linux. So far I've been able to install fedora core 3 with no problems. I also agree that you might want to explore redhat ES and SuSe 9, as more companies are using them.
type
man n00b
That'll help.
Quiet a few peeps like teh Linux for Dummies books. That'll at least get you a basic understanding of teh OS.
Also, don't rule out a Caldera build. RH is nice too...

While we're on the topic of Linux, anyone recommend a build for a dell laptop? Mainly looking for wireless support out of the box. I tried this a year back, but ended up jacking up my install during the kernel upgrade...

Typing "man rear" is another fun one.
