i have xp at home/work and haven't used vista yet so i'm not much help. his start up screen has his login but nothing else. is there a default admin login he can use? how would he turn off logins since he's the only one who uses his computer?

You sure do preach this technique, a lot. Have you been previously scorned by the C:\WINDOWS folder?

That is why on every machine I work on I make a second administrator user,

But the tool stogie posted is the other way, although there are better ones out there, that one does work.

Search for Hiren's Boot CD.

You can download it from bittorrent, it has a very good one
Active Password Changer 3.0.420

and many other useful tools.Absolutly make the backup admin once you are done with the machine so you won't have to go through this again.
