Microsoft Word won't work
Microsoft Word won't work
I have MS Office student 2007. It includes powerpoint, excel, onenote, and Microsoft Word. Everything is working fine but Word. When I go to open it says it failed to start correctly last time, then askes me to start in safe mode. I have tried safe mode and went into the diagnostics and everything tested fine. It will not open. If I click no to opening in safe mode it goes to the MS office 2007 screen and locks up there. It worked one day and then failed the next. I don't use it often and don't have much in there, but it would be nice if it worked. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it without success. I have searched the web and haven't found any help. All I can think of is that I have something set wrong on my computer and it won't allow it to start. Any ideas anyone?? Thanks in advance.

Go to START/ RUN
type in: winword /r
This re-registers Word in the Windows registry. You will see the Office installer start then close. After it closes try to open Word normally.
You can find out more about Word's startup switches at this URL:

I did the re registry and it still doesn't work. I'm not really sure what I need to do with regards to the start up switches. Could it be that my winword.exe is gone. Maybe I am missing one of these switch commands. I am not a computer person, but I can usually muttle my way through and make it work. Thanks for your help.
It did go to the configuration screen and do the configure but it said that office failed to start last time, do you want to start in safe mode? I selected no and it went into configuration. It finished and I tried to start office, but it didn't work again. Not sure what to do next.

Excel, onenote, and powerpoint all open normally. Get the Microsoft office screen for about 1 second then the program opens. The only one that does not work is Word. I don't even use the rest of them, Word is the only one that gets occasional use. The Microsoft Office 2007 screen comes up and stays after telling it I don't want it to start in safe mode. It will open in safe mode however, but you can't open any files or anything. I don't have any idea.
you don't have any MS Works software loaded do you? there used to be an issue in older version of office where the "works for word" plugin in Works would bomb Word. Also, another possible fix would be to locate the normal.dot file which is the default word template(well at least in previous versions of word). This file gets corrupt sometimes and causes issues like you describe. You simply delete the file then re-open word and it creates a new template.
in Word 2k3, the normal.dot file is in your profile folder.
ie. C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

My computer came loaded with works and a trial of office. I bought office since its more popular than works and my G/F used my computer for her masters program for 3 months. She didn't have any problems, and didn't screw it up since it worked well for a couple months after I got my computer back from her. This is running on Vista (Ultimate?) (or not running should i say?).

I'm not given that option when I right click on the Word Icon. The only way to get out of the Word Office 2007 screen is to go to the task manager/processes and end process for WINWORD.E... Is there anything I need to do to be able to right click and get the run as admin option?
Thank you.
Thank you.
^^ Saw that coming a mile away!
If you have the install material, can you perform a "repair" (start the re-install process and it should ask you if you want to install, repair, or un-install) on MSOffice and repair Word?

Is there a difference between when you click on the Word.exe icon and when you just try to open a pre-existing Word document? Also, did you try the "Normal.dot" rename to "Normal.old" technique?
Also, have you uninstalled Works?

What we've learned so far:
a) re-registration does not work
b) reinstallation does not work
c) run as admin does not work
d) loads in safe mode
Now, unless blue's already logging on as administrator, we can almost rule out user-specific settings (we still haven't got an answer regarding the normal.dot, but from c, it sounds like it may not work)
Mainly because of d, the biggest culprit appears to be a startup template/macro or an add-in that's misbehaving. Suspect the latter, but here's a couple more things to check:
- \documents and settings\userid\application data\Microsoft\Word\Startup
- remove any files from there
- chances are slim cos of c, but stranger things have happened
- remove add-ins via registry (make sure to back up)
- run regedit.exe
- go to hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\Office\Word\ Addins
- for every add-in that's listed in there, go to the LoadBehavior key and change the value to 0.
Good luck

you should be able to search for the normal.dot file but within the search function you must make sure you search hidden files and folders. I think its under the c:\users\username folder in vista
Edit: I think it may be called normal.dotx in office 2k7
