Windows 7 Build 7057 Screenshots

Suddenly, new Windows 7 builds are coming at a rapid clip and, more notably, are leaking much more quickly. In the past, we'd see builds that were a month or more old at the time. But the most recent leak, of build 7057, is just a week old. Progress!

Definitely before the holiday season but quite possibly before the back to school rush. Release Candidate (RC) is being rumored to be released in early to mid April (April 10th to be exact). If you look at the Vista timeline it went to RC 1 phase in late August and was Released to Manufacturing (RTM) on Nov 8 with it being available to business on Nov 30. So if Win 7 follows the same schedule it could be RTM'ed in June and quite possibly sooner. One difference between Vista and Win7 is that Vista had two RC phases while Win7 will only have one. There's alot of extra work that goes into releasing a build to the public that slows down the progress of the final product. During pre release stages of Vista there were official builds coming out to the testers every month, these builds must be tested for weeks before being released. For example the Win7 beta build was built on Dec 12th but wasn't released to the public until Jan 10th due to all the testing it had to go through before being released. This is a waste of time for a build that will just be thrown away, so doing this many times is an unnecessary distraction and a delay of the final product. So for Win7 they're only doing one beta build and one RC build. This allows more time for the developers to focus better on the final product. All other builds besides build 7000 are unofficial and were leaked by someone from MS and haven't had the extensive testing that the beta build had.

In build 7057 it has the capability to adjust the logon screen background using a registry hack (in vista you had to download program to do it). There doesn't seem to be a simple way to do this and it seems as if it's designed for the OEMs to customize the login screen with their big ugly logo. but if you know what you're doing you can do it yourself.

First, a check is made to determine if the customization functionality is enabled or not. More precisely, a DWORD value named OEMBackground in the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Aut hentication\LogonUI\Background key is checked. Its data, of Boolean type, defines whether or not this behavior is turned on, i.e. 1 for enabled, 0 for disabled. This value may not exist by default, depending on your system.
hopefully they add this capability to the personalize options.

Also Office 14 is going to be the first version of Office to be released in a 64 bit flavor. I wouldn't expect any big improvements with 64 bit over 32 bit except this might be a chance for MS to drop support for some legacy code during the transition.

depends. It's just like installing any other OS. If you're running Vista now, you can upgrade but and that would keep all your programs and files intact. but I wouldn't do that. Or if you do a custom install to the same partition that your current windows OS is on it during the install process it will take all the files in your current OS's documents and settings, program files and windows folder an put it in a folder called windows.old which you'll be able to access after Win7 is installed. You'd still have to reinstall those programs all over again. But if you keep your porn and music in the designated "my videos" or "my music" folders then those will be saved. Anything else not in those three folder or their sub folders will be lost. If you are running Vista and you have say a 250gb HD for example and you're only using 100gb of it you can go to computer management, click on disk management then right click on your Vista OS partition and choose shrink Volume. If it allows you to shrink the volume at least 16,000MB then you can install Win7 in the extra space created. Make sure that that space is formatted though before running the install.

The shrink volume method I detailed above is probably the best way to create space and install Win7, I wouldn't upgrade from vista or replace Vista with a pre release version of Win7.

I'm putting this in the thread.

I upgraded from vista to 7 three times actually but didn't have good success. It could have also been that i upgraded from one build to another. I did it basically because i wasn't scared of messing something up. I know how to fix most anything plus i have backups. I went from vista to 7 build 7000, then from 7000 to 7022 then from 7022 to 7057. For the most part everything was ok but i noticed oddities here and there, yet i managed to deal with them all until yesterday. It took a complete dump and hosed my domain profile. Had to reload, now i have a fresh install of 7057.

Never upgrade from a previous build or even from Vista.

ALWAYS do a clean install when its a Beta

And yes, I am running 7057 on this machine. Got it hooked up to the TV

Build 7068 photos and ISO has leaked in 32 and 64 bit flavors. I'm downloading it as we speak. 7048 was my highest build but I was under the impression that RC was coming out early to mid april but know we've learned that it's highly likely that RC is coming out in May. MS prematurely released an article detailing the info about RC that was being released in May. It's since been taken down but that pretty much sets the time. So I'll upgrade to 7068.

Finally updating the gadgets for Win7 replacing the ones that came with Vista

I'll install and see if there's any changes. Supposedly this will be the RC but IDK.

Build 7068 installed in 23 min and I took this pic during install

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/25469567@N06/3394647124/" title="DSC00424 by klxz79, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3432/3394647124_82fda7e132_b.jpg" width="1024" height="577" alt="DSC00424" /></a>
It appears build 7068 is going to be the Release Candidate build, at least the EULA refers to it as such. This is the first build of Vista or 7 to give me a install all the drivers correctly for me. It found drivers for my smBus controller which is notorius for not being installed and my jmb36x ide controller. The drivers for my TV capture card were downloaded and installed immediately when I reached the desktop for the first time, the whole process took about 30 secs and I was up and running.

I also have a new icon for my mouse in the devices and printers panel

It's purty! by default screen captures using the snipping tool don't have the red outline around them (which was something I always turned off), this is the opposite of earlier builds and Vista. It's a small victory but it was a pet peeve of mine.

Windows Fax and Scan still has the same look it had in Vista, I guess it's not changing even though it doesn't fit with the new silvery 7 look.

Build 7068 was built on 3/21/09

I figured I'd update this for build 7068. It ran VERY well, it did better than all the other OSes. This benchmark is called Performance Test I used it cause it was free and worked with 64-bit. This is the same system but with 5 different OSes in this order

Vista 32bit
Xp 32bit
Vista 64bit
Windows 7 32bit (M3 Pre-Beta Build 6801)
Windows 7 Build 7068 64bit

my system is
Gigabyte P35-DS4 mobo
Intel Q6600
Nvidia 8800GT
4gb DDR2 RAM 800mhz
RAID 0 2x Raptor 74Gb 10k RPM (contains Vista 32 and now Win7 7068)
Maxtor 750Gb 7.2k RPM (contains XP, Windows 7 M3 and Vista 64)
24in Gateway LCD

Here's feature of Win7 called Credential Manager. It's similar to Keychain in OS X. It's a place to centralize the storage, backup and restoration of your Login ID's, passwords, certificates, etc. You can add or edit ID's using the credential manager. For example using the credential manager I added my login ID for my server on the network. So when I opened remote desktop for the first time on this OS and typed in the IP address of my server it automatically used my login ID. Also if you choose to from remote desktop to save the credentials like you always could do they show up in the credential manager. Credential Manager however does not work with browser saved IDs like facebook, or your bank's website. I believe it works on like intranet sites or sites that pop up a windows login box to access, but I can't test that claim but they say it does.

What's new in Win7 is that you can backup and restore your credentials and using the backup file you can transfer them if necessary.

Credential Manager isn't new to Win7, what's new is the ability to backup, restore and transfer credentials through the windows vault feature.

Okay, I'm nowhere close to where you guys are as far as knowledge base regarding these systems. But I do have a question regarding something that sticks out like a sore thumb. Maybe this is common but it'll kill me if I don't ask. Maybe I'll make a fool out of myself - wouldn't be a first. Anyway.....

From the screen shots of the Windows 7 OS - I've noticed that the minimize, maximize, and close (X) button on the top right of the window are identical to the same buttons on Google's Chrome browser. Now I know that MS and Google are about as mutually exclusive as they can be, but could there be something going on between the two working together? Or is this just a normal commonality?
I'm thinking it must be just that, something common among them, as they couldn't let something be so blatantly obvious. Help me out here guys.

Yes that's standard UI design. Almost all windows have that, except for dialog boxes. They're supposed to, it's in the rules for good UI design for Windows since at least Windows 95. If every window had a different way of closing, maximizing or minimizing windows than it would by very difficult for the user to learn. Just like in an automatic car the stick is alwasys in P R N D5 D4 3 2 1, etc. It's a common standard.

I signed up for the Beta back when you could download the betas off of Microsofts website. I have a cd key for it. Can I use that same key in all of the new builds that I can download via torrent?

Upgrade from Windows 7 Beta 1 at Your Own Risk

"News Commentary. Sometimes, I just chuckle at these Microsoft Engineering Windows 7 blog posts. Today, it's why not to upgrade from Beta 1 to the release candidate."
I call it the "Keep your hands out of the fire" post. First, it's cajoling to not stick your hands into the fire. But if you really must, here are instructions how to do so.

I'm glad they're asking everyone to downgrade to vista and then install RC. Updatin is one thing that hasn't gone well, so it's nice to see them really try to get this right. IDK if I'll do it, I guess I might.

This build, 7100.0.winmain_win7rc.090421-1700 has been reportedly been handed out to OEM partners and TAP gold customers. Microsoft had recently published details that MSDN and TechNet subscribers would be receiving the RC build.

It's been reported that the RC build have been given to the partners (OEMS, IHV and ISV) which means it's been released to the torrents. It should be out on msdn and technet next week and official public release should be May 5th.

I'm downloading 32 and 64 bit versions right now. i'm going to upgrade the 32bit version from Vista and do a clean install on 64 bit.

Yes, it's that "secret new feature" you've been hearing about ...</b></p> <p>Over a month ago, we were briefed about a secret Microsoft technology that we were told would be announced alongside the Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) and would ship in final form simultaneously with the final version of Windows 7. This technology, dubbed <strong>Windows XP Mode </strong>(XPM, formerly Virtual Windows XP or Virtual XP, VXP), dramatically changes the compatibility story for Windows 7 and, we believe, has serious implications for Windows development going forward. Here's what's happening.</p> <p>XPM is <b>built on the next generation Microsoft Virtual PC 7 product line</b>, which <b>requires processor-based virtualization support</b> (Intel and AMD) to be present and enabled on the underlying PC, much like Hyper-V, Microsoft's server-side virtualization platform. However, XPM is not Hyper-V for the client. It is instead a host-based virtualization solution like Virtual PC; the hardware assistance requirement suggests this will be the logical conclusion of this product line from a technological standpoint. That is, we fully expect future client versions of Windows to include a Hyper-V-based hypervisor.</p> <p><a href="http://www.winsupersite.com/images/win7/virtualxp.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.winsupersite.com/images/win7/virtualxp.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="388"></a> <br><em>Windows XP Mode running Word 2003 under XP and Word 2007 under Windows 7.</em></p> <p><b>XP Mode consists of the Virtual PC-based virtual environment and a fully licensed copy of Windows XP with Service Pack 3</b> (SP3). <b>It will be made available, for free, to users of Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions</b> via a download from the Microsoft web site. (That is, it will not be included in the box with Windows 7, but is considered an out-of-band update, like Windows Live Essentials.) XPM works much like today's Virtual PC products, but with one important exception: As with the enterprise-based MED-V (Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization) product, XPM does not require you to run the virtual environment as a separate Windows desktop. Instead, as you install applications inside the virtual XP environment, they are published to the host (Windows 7) OS as well. (With shortcuts placed in the Start Menu.) That way, <b>users can run Windows XP-based applications (like IE 6) alongside Windows 7 applications under a single desktop</b>.</p> <p>Obviously, XPM has huge ramifications for Windows going forward. By removing the onus of legacy application compatibility from the OS, Microsoft can strip away deadwood technology from future versions of Windows at a speedier clip, because customers who need to run older applications can simply do so with XPM. For Windows 7 specifically, XPM is a huge convenience, especially for Microsoft's corporate customers, who can of course control XPM behavior via standard Microsoft administration and management technologies like Active Directory (AD) and Group Policy (GP). And it significantly recasts the Windows 7 compatibility picture. Before, Microsoft could claim that Windows 7 would be at least as compatible as Windows Vista. Now, <b>they can claim almost complete Windows XP compatibility, or almost 100 percent compatibility with all currently running Windows applications</b>.</p> <p>We've both been using and testing Virtual XP for over a month and we we've been dying to communicate what we've discovered, as you might imagine. So here's what you can expect. Paul will publish a high-level <b><a href="http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/xp_mode_pre_shots.asp">screenshot gallery</a></b> on the <a href="http://www.winsupersite.com" target="_blank">SuperSite for Windows</a> showing off Windows XP Mode and what it's like to run Windows XP and Windows 7 applications side-by-side. On <a href="http://www.withinwindows.com/" target="_blank">Within Windows</a>, Rafael will provide <b>a deep technical dive</b> into Windows XP Mode and explain how it works and how you can make it work the way you want. Later, Paul will add a Windows XP Mode article to his <b><a href="http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/ff.asp" target="_blank">Windows 7 Feature Focus series</a></b> as well. And of course we'll be covering this feature in-depth in "<b>Windows 7 Secrets</b>," which will be published by Wiley &amp; Sons later this year.</p> <p>Thanks for reading!</p> <p>Paul and Rafael</p>

Sounds to me like Microsoft is basically doing what Parallels and VMware have been doing with their host-based virtualization solutions for a couple of years now. Damn convenient though and damn nice that it will be a no-cost add-on.

Wow, awesome feature. I'm been using VMs for years, but throwing in a free copy of XP? That's great.

The Firm I work at has been toying with skipping Vista completely and going right to Windows 7. This will definitely make that decision easier.

I think they waited this long to announce this so that they cannibalized as few Vista sales as possible. Now it doesn't really make sense to choose Vista over Win 7.

Likely. And, I'm sure there are plenty of firms that are still on XP because they didn't upgrade to Vista. This essentially renders Vista obsolete.

Well the release candidate which is an almost final build is being released publicly on may 5th. So I'd expect Win 7 to go gold aka RTM in two or three months. It'd be nice for it to be released for the back to school rush but it should be out for the holiday season. For reference Vista hit RC1 status in August then RC2 in Sept and it reached RTM in early Nov. 2006. Win7 will only have one RC build and is way more stable and lessy buggy than Vista was during it's pre-release phase.
