If it's of any help, there's been rumors floating around that MS will offer free or discounted upgrades to Windows 7 for anyone that purchases a new Vista equipped machine after the beginning of July.

Buy the new laptop, before you do anything, partition in, giving as much space as possible to 2nd partition for Window 7....

Install Window 7 and enjoy the both worlds. My laptop currently has Vista and Win7, can't get rid of Vista yet because my HP MediaSmart software does not like Window 7,and I'm not loosing my blue-ray cauz of Win7.

I haven't read the entire thread, but this came to mind. If anybody is having issues with 3.5" floppy drives with Windows 7, just relax, a fix for that should be coming soon. My friend slapped his head when he heard about it 4 days ago. lol

MS announced the versions of Windows 7 and while there may seem like there's alot and that it will be confusing it actually won't be.

There's 6 versions just like Vista
Starter
Basic
Home Premium
Professional
Enterprise
Ultimate

Starter is mostly for emerging markets (third world countries) and it doesn't have aero and is limited to running 3 apps at a time. Basic is also only for emerging markets only. Home Premium is for all markets and has all the cool features everyone's talking about including multi-touch, media center, aero, new taskbar, homegroups, etc. Professional has all the features of Home premium but adds some business features like bit locker, advanced backup, and location aware printing. Enterprise has all those feature and support direct access, branch cache and full disk encryption. Ultimate is basically the consumer version of enterprise I believe.

Now let me explain for those in the US how it'll be. You can forget about Starter and basic edition as you won't be able to buy those, also if you're a consumer forget about the enterprise version as that's only sold via volume license. So that leaves Home premium, Professional and Ultimate. You can also pretty much cross off Ultimate as well as it will have limited availability in retail and OEM and isn't much benefit to consumers except power users like me. So that leaves Home and Professional which is hey just like XP. I think if they wanted they could merge the professional and enterprise version but I understand them wanting to separate them to get a little more money out of the advanced features that most small business won't incorporate such as direct access, branch cache seeing as these features require server 2008 R2 as well.

While it would be simpler for MS to make one version like Apple does, it just doesn't make sense for them. It's not that easy and they have way more customers and markets to satisfy than apple. Apple just has the upper class market and doesn't compete in the bargain basement computing market or third world countries. Most of Apple sales come from Macs costing $1200 plus while windows comes on PC's as low as $350 where apple has nothing even close to that. Starter and basic are in markets where most people are poor and can't afford even a $500 computer so these OSes are cheap so that they can compete with piracy that is rampant in those areas, like China for example.

For businesses you have to decide between Professional and enterprise but you should really only get enterprise if you're going to roll out Server 2008 R2 as well and had volume licensing so I guess there isn't much of a choice there either.

For users the decision will most likely be made for them when they buy the PC. If you buy the consumer version of a Dell PC (inspiron or XPS) it'll come with Home premium if you buy the business version of a Dell PC (vostro or Optiplex) it'll come with professional and both may give you an option to upgrade to Ultimate if you want.

I don't know why people seemed to be making such a big damn deal out of the multiple versions. It's almost the exact same thing that was done with Vista. If anything, it's an improvement since it's probably going to be harder to find anyone that's trying to hock machines with Home Basic.

I'm wondering if Starter edition will be what comes on most netbooks cause that would suck but I think it will be that way.

What makes it better than vista is that each version has all the features of the version beneath it. For example in Vista business edition it doesn't have media center, movie maker or dvd maker which is in the cheaper home premium edition. While in Windows 7 professional you get media center and dvd maker along with some bit locker, location aware printing, etc.

I've been meaning to post this for the last couple day but haven't. If you didn't know there's a little fight going on over how UAC in Windows7 beta is implemented. Two MS bloggers released info about UAC saying that in Win7 beta if UAC is left at the default setting that once malware is on the PC it will be able to elevate user privilege levels without prompting the user. This basically will give malware admin (root) rights without notifying the user. MS came back and said this was by design and won't fix it cause it would go against setting which is don't notify me when I make changes to windows settings which would include UAC levels. the bloggers also released proof of concept code that you could try out on your machine (malware free). Earlier today MS still stuck to their guns and even made a blog post about why saying that it was by design and getting said malware on to the users PC without prompting them hasn't been accomplished due to increased security of Vista/Win7, so these bloggers points are moot.

In other news my friend should be getting a netbook in the next few weeks and she has allowed me to install Win7 on it!!!! She's using it soley for school I believe it will be a Dell Mini 9 with bluetooth, wi-fi, 1gb RAM, and 16gb HD. I'm also going to install Office 2007 on it. So I'll report back on how Win7 operates on a netbook and how it installs from a USB flash drive. It should be fun.

i'm ordering a solid state drive and i'm going to load 7 on it to see how the performance it. I'll post results once I get the drive. should be sometime next week.

i'm going with corsair for now but might get an OCZ apex series to test as well.

solid states nice, but give me a full blown windows that runs out of 8 or 16 GBs of RAM FTW. network storage everything i dont need close to the OS.

I read a review of the apex series. It's pretty badass cause it's mlc flash that has been setup internally as a RAID 0 array. So it gives you almost the speed of slc flash but with the cheaper price of mlc flash. I'm just gonna wait until they start RAIDing slc drives.

I'm holding off on a flash drive right now. It's kinda like the plasma lcd market was a few years ago, prices are plummeting and the new model will be twice as fast and half the price. It's just not worth it to be an early adopter. Maybe when Win7 goes RTM I'll get one but until then I'll just wait. I'm happy with my WD Raptor RAID 0 array!!!

Its for my company, truth be told. One of our graphic designers needs a new HD and I want to get this SSD for it. I plan on installing it with Win7 on a test box first before I hand it over to him though. If I like it, my boss will let me get one for my laptop probably.

The guy who does the ordering is dragging his feet and hasn't ordered the drive yet but it may have been a blessing in disguise. It looks like Newegg just had a price drop on the OCZ apex series + a $20 MIR so i just told him to get the 120GB apex drive instead of the corsair. I'm going to nag him to death to order it today

right click on the c drive and choose shrink volume and see how much space it'll allow you to shrink. If it's about 16gb or more do that and then take the new free space and create and format it.

I'd use 20gb max for win 7 but you need at least 16gb for install but you'll have about 10gb of free space after.

you can try it and see if it will let you install on 13gb. anyone else know if he deleted his recovery partition after shrinking his OS partition could he somehow combine the free space from both into one partition?

I've heard of Win 7 running on a 800mhz processor even though the minimum requirements is 1000mhz so, IDK I'd at least try it. If it doesn't work I think you might be able to get the free space back in your C drive if you choose extend volume in disk management but don't quote me on it.
