Maxtor Hard Drive Caught FIRE!!!

http://www.dragonsteelmods.com/index...d=351&Itemid=1

Dell batteries you say catch fire? Well don't worry about that dell battery, look inside your PC case at your HDD, mine just went up in smoke and flames...

Read on to see the pics and learn more about exactly what happened!

Well, I was going about my business tonight, got back from the store and hit the power button on my computer... I heard this crackling sound, and smelled something burning, I got worried... but the system continued to boot, but didn't actually boot, it said NTLDR not found, which means it couldn't find the OS Loader on the other drives... so I restarted the system and went into the BIOS, sure enough my 200Gig SATA Maxtor hard drive wasn't there.....

So I powered the system off and pulled the drive, I examined it and it looked fine, so I figured I would just plug it in while it was out of the case to make sure it was running... when I hit the power button flames..LITERALLY shot out of the bottom of the HDD, I was like F**K!! The flames were a good three inches high, I quickly hit the power button on the PSU to Power everything down and un hooked the drive, one of the chips on the bottom of the HDD is burned badly, it actually looks like it exploded, some of the legs came de-soldered and are actually bent outwards like they blew out...

I popped a new HDD in the case and am installing Windows XP on there now, so the system still works fine, just the HDD got fried apparently...

BUT FLAMES SHOOTING OUT OF IT?!?!?!?! Damn, first dell batteries now Hard Drives... What's next?!?

ANd FYI, the Hard Drive is a 200Gig Maxtor DiamondMax 10 SATA150 Manufactured on March 1st 2005

I bought the drive in June of 2005 from NewEgg, it has been fine ever since, I came home from store and POOF... No overheating no nothing, ,machineis not overclocked...

Here are the pics, in no certain order, just a bunch on them.. they are 1024x768 in size

I doubt there was a fire. I had an old motherboard lying around and we took two terminals from an electric train transformer and touched em to random parts of the board. We had gotten chips to glow in small sections and smoke, but no flames.

I haven't bought a maxtor since my 40 MB drive crashed on my that I spent $400 on. WD has grown by leaps and bounds.

also if he bought an identical maxtor hd and swapped the circuit boards, he could probably get his data back

Someone needs to stop overclocking their hard drive.

I like the name Seagate, which is why I bought one. Maxtor sounds :ghey:

But if you are serving from an NAS, you have to overclock your network too.

Pffft...that's nothing. Wait until my HD's VTEC kicks in.

It'll blast up to 45,000RPM.

Looks like a fried chip, it could be caused from all sorts of things. A bad voltage regulator on the mobo, a voltage spike when he turned on the computer from the power supply. He could have water cooling in his system and has some water short out stuff...

who knows, it's not a common thing to happen though...

Someone looking for their 15m of fame on the internet

EXACTLY...!! Thank you..

How many more - ______ caught on fire sites are there going to be..?

I mean read this..

I examined it and it looked fine, so I figured I would just plug it in while it was out of the case to make sure it was running... when I hit the power button flames..
Could be ESD issue.
My guess is he didn't unplug the power cord in the back of the computer Or he tried to plug it back in with the power on.. Any combination of power, ESD sensitive chips and not being grounded is Asking for trouble.. Was probably touching the chip or a component on the PCB when he powered it.

He's a idiot..

That was recent. It says in the article that the person bought the drive in June 2005.

AGH IT'S THE DREADED 'TIN WHISKERS'

Perhaps the biggest unknown in the lead-removal process is the danger of so-called tin whiskers. The subject of much debate and little consensus, tin whiskers are tiny, spontaneous growths that can sprout from surface finishes and cause electrical shorts. In the past, the tin was mixed with lead to prevent the whiskers.
