My dad has a At&T cell phone and I was wondering how can I call him in india when he goes there. At&t charges $2.50 a minute if I call his phone.

Whats the best way to call him

have him unlock the phone in India,buy a sim card and use there services. its much cheaper that way.

Certain phone vendors will have unlock codes so that phones can work on any available compatible system (i.e. a GSM phone will work on any provider's GSM networks, etc.).
Your father will have to find a vendor to unlock his phone in India, unless he can get SIM cards with cheap long distance rates that work without unlocking.

 

If you have been with AT&T for a long time (I'd say a year) and if you have a world phone that is not the iPhone, you can call up ATT Wireless Customer Service and have them unlock it for you. They will send you the unlock code through email with instructions. I did it for my phone when I went to India last year.

 

You can download Skype on most cell phones. Check iSkoot. If you do not want to go through the hassle of unlocking the phone you can simply call AT&T and tell them to put him on the International Calling plan for the month and that will reduce calls to 1.99 per min & .50 per text if I remember correctly. I had to do this once.
