I'd suggest Red Hat 7.2 ... I'm sure there are plenty more, but that's not ancient but nor does it require all that the latest versions do.

gentoo

but if your asking this question you probably cant install gentoo

so i vote redhat just cause its a good newb distro, if you can deal with anything more advanced slackware or debian w/ windowmaker will run pretty well, specifics about the machine would be awsome

Redhat 7.x has SERIOUS glibc issues. Do NOT install it. This is why they had versions 7.0.,7.1,7.2,7.3 they never got it right...

Redhat is not a rewbie O/S as some like to say it is on here... I use it for all my servers. I don't like gentoo, debian, slackware, corell, VA linux, ubtuntu... all of which I have extensively used. I've been playing with linux since before there was a distribution out for it. Pre kernel .97 (slackware was the 1st distro available, and it was a floppy install you had to do by hand, no installtion program)

Anyone who says any other distro is more advanced is off their rocker. Ask them how it's more advanced... Redhat does stuff that other distroso don't out of the box. RAID, clustering, distrbuted, not to mention the enterprise redhat has custom mods to the kernel that aren't available to the public which enchance it even further.

Redhat conforms to being close to SYS V. The others I find to be hacks, while cool in some fashon or another. I wouldn't use them in a production environment, nor suggest them to any newbie. However I do play with gentoo at home.

do you plan on keeping windows 95 on the machine and adding linux as well? meaning do you want this machine to be a dual-boot pc so you have the option of booting up to windows 95 or linux?
