Linux geeks....
I'm a dumbass when it comes to Linux... so I'm still learning...
I'm currently using Fedora Core 4 and want to upgrade FireFox 1.0.7 to 1.5.
How the hell do I do this once I downloaded the .tar file from the Mozilla website?
Sorry, I suck...
Thanks guys...

See... when i click on the firefox.ssh file in the directory, it doesn't startup. Or if I point the existing target to the new firefox directory, it doesn't startup.
Sorry if I sound like a total dumbass at this point, but with all the painting these past few days off work, I might have just killed a few brain cells....

Extract the tarball and run the installer like so:
tar -xzvf firefox-1.0.7.installer.tar.gz
cd firefox-installer
./firefox-installer

If you have Nautilus set up to run Executable Text Files you can just double click firefox-installer to run.

this means some other package on your machine is not current enough to install firefox, like one of these:
* nspr >= %{nspr_devel}
* nss = 3.11-2
* desktop-file-utils >= 0.9
* rpmlib(VersionedDependencies) = 3.0.3-1
* /bin/sh

you could check all of them to see if they meet the requirements, like so
rpm -qa | grep libz.so.1 (for each require up there)
or do a --nodeps to install firefox without checking the other packages.
maybe the source install will be better, but i doubt it.
did it say what failed? try rpm -Uvv that will print out more info.
or try that other rpm.

Wait! Second RPM worked! Install is a success... currently running 1.5
hey wipeOut, where do you find all the RPMs? and how do you update automatically (place them on the up2date list?)

rpm.pbone.net or rpmfind.net
the up2date is just for updates released by the fedora team.
you could use yum. you could probably make your own repository, then set up2date to look to that. but then you have to populate the repository yourself and be aware of when updates are released. pain in the ass really.

NiteQwill im using FC4 too. So far i have been through FC2,3,4 and its has gotten better everytime and hell of a lot better than Xp ever could in my opinion.
www.fedoraforum.org is a great place to find answers and just read and learn things.

have you tried yumex? its a graphical interface for yum. so all you do is search for the program name or type and it gives you a list. whats better is that it resolves all the dependencies so you dont have to worry about that.
as root yum install yumex
btw: since firefox 1.5 is still beta they dont have it on the regular repos, its under the development repos. on yumex just click repos and click the checkbox on the ones you want to activate and hit refresh.
good luck on the learning and feel free to ask any questions if you need help
