Question Large LCD Monitor Recommendations

27" preferred. Wouldn't mind getting the Apple Thunderbolt, but $999 is a bit much for that kind of real estate.

Needs to have HDMI. Going to be plugged into a Mac Mini.

If not the Apple I would get one of the Dells.

http://reviews.cnet.com/lcd-monitors/dell-u2713hm/4505-3174_7-35472876.html

Not bad for $700. IPS, LED, HDMI...

I'm looking for the same and I've already read a gazillion reviews. Still can't decide.

Check this out:

PS Dell, Apple.. IPS..they all use LG displays, including the $400 one above.

I have been very happy with Dell dell displays for general computer use, albeit in the 22" and 24" range...

I currently have 2x 22" IPS and 1x24" IPS

I would avoid their lower end line, though, except for basic computing tasks for non-discriminating viewers.

Note: there are different type of IPS technologies out there. I prefer P-IPS for true colors and depth. Some prefer S-IPS for faster response. Also, matte or glossy display. This is why I can't decide... Grrrr.

Displayport is a must for me as well.

This is true. There really are only so many panel makers in general. I've had my iMacs panel replaced 3 times, each time they were listed as LG panels.

However, that doesn't mean one LG IPS panel is the same as the next. So I agree with stogie, never buy the bottom tier products.

The issue I have with this is that with a screen so huge the resolution is only 1080p, which is great for multimedia, but if you need workspace it makes more sense to shoot for the 2560 x 1440 display.

Yeah but the price difference between the two resolutions is not worth it to me, the money could be put into something else like a SSD. Which is what I did, love me them load times <3

It really depends on the user in the end.

Displayport can't push more than 1920x1080, correct? So even if the max res is 2560 x 1440, I couldn't get there, right?

Why are you talking about the displayport though?

Q: What is the maximum length of DisplayPort cable that supports a resolution of 2560×1600?

A: 2560 x 1600 (WQXGA resolution) is supported over all 2-meter “DP Certified” cables. Some cables, due to their design, may be capable of supporting 2560 x 1600 resolution over lengths longer than 2 meters.

Ok, so I wonder if the mac mini can push that. It can push that via thunderbolt, that I know...

What year mac mini? The new ones are pretty nice but go back two years and the video card, or lack of one, really will hurt you at resolutions that high.

It's the 2012 model. I'm not a gamer or anything, so I just need something that will get me by. Don't need 300fps playing Crysis.

Mac Mini has Intel HD Graphics 4000. I think max res is 1920x1200 only because it does not have dual link dvi or displayport. (Adapters won't help you)

PS I really don't see a point of you getting IPS screen for a mac mini - you won't enjoy it. Get a nice 27" 1080p Samsung like mentioned above and enjoy!

^Yea...I agree with Tekno completely. Aim for $400 or so for a 27". No sense in spending more. IPS is totally irrelevant.

wiki says it'll work.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_Mini

"With the included HDMI to DVI adapter, for those currently using a DVI interface, the HDMI port will work with resolutions up to 1920 × 1200 pixels, while the Mini DisplayPort can concurrently support up to a resolution up to 2560 × 1600 pixels."

As a dock for their laptops...I think so.

My only concern is once iMac production gets up to snuff...they'll release a new super thin monitor.

Looking for an ultrawide gaming monitor, this might be the ticket. Promotion for $200 off at the moment:

https://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-34...gaming-monitor

Problems are the IPS light bleed, but a 34" monitor with 144hz at 3440x1440 is exactly what I'm looking for. Have a GTX 1080 but the 950F is G-Sync compatible as well. I don't think I should play the waiting game, cause who knows how long I'll have to wait for a G-Sync Ultimate monitor and how much it'll cost.

My current job doesn't involve working from home, but it would still be nice in the future.

*Bump*

I'm looking to purchase a new monitor because my current one's backlight is failing and because both my wife and I would like a larger ultrawide for more space/can work on multiple things at once. My current monitor is a 24" Dell ST2420L, Color Profile D6500, 1920 x 1080 resolution that is about 10 years old. I'm looking at a curved ultrawide.. ~34" and I've read that a 3440 x 1440 is better than a 2560 x 1080. It will be mainly used for everyday home use; MS Office, working from home, watch some videos, playing some 'older' games (not newer games because my PC is also 10 years old so the graphics card is pretty basic, but we will eventually upgrade to a new PC/Laptop soon)... so it will basically be used for a mix of different things but nothing special.

I'd prefer to spend $500 or less and I've seen plenty of them out there. Plus, we aren't tech snobs so I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference in a $1k monitor vs a $400 one.

I've asked for recommendations and a few that were pointed out were the Nixeus NX-EDG34S, although I couldn't find it in stock anywhere, and the LG 34WK650-W, although that one isn't curved. I did find this MSI MAG321CQR for a good price and has good reviews.

Any tips/recommendations?

Thx.

I have a Dell U3417W that I have been using for three years and am very happy with. The replacement U3419W is above your price range.

The Philips 328E1CA might be a good candidate - curved, 32", 3840 x 2160, and $339.
