Laptops and Wireless Networking
Laptops and Wireless Networking
Closest related forum I could find regarding my questions...
I just ordered a new laptop with wireless networking capabilities ("g").
I have Adelphia High-Speed Internet at home.
Question - Is a wireless router the only thing I'll need to buy in order to have wireless internet in my home? I guess I just connect the router to my cable modem?
Also, here at work, I've seen users with company supplied notebooks be able to have wireless connectivity to the network and internet. Do you think I will be able to connect to the internet (don't care about the company network) if I bring my laptop in to work, or are there certain things companies can do to only allow certain wireless devices to use their wireless network? Just wondering b/c it would be nice to take my laptop to the cafeteria during lunch and browse around. I guess I can find out myself in about a week, but I'm just curious!

Your laptop will have a wireless network adapter and will connect to any 802.11b or 802.11g wireless network is authorized on. At home, you just need your own wireless router connected to your cable modem and you're set as long as your house isn't too big. Please take 10 minutes to secure your access point.
Your work's network may be configured to only allow specified computers to connected and probably requires a code. Otherwise, anyone walking by could connect. Bad idea. If its secured, I doubt they'll be too eager to allow a personal computer on their lan.
