Laptops with SSD drives

Can anybody help point out some laptops that have SSD drives, standard or upgrade that I don't have to buy the top of the line, fastest one to get a SSD in it?

TIA

Buy which ever laptop you want and just slap one in. Never buy computers based on the HDD, the easiest thing to swap out.

^ you can get a variety of laptops with SSD from maufacturers but you are going to pay out the ying yang for it and not get the best one so do what the guy suggested and get the SSD seperate

HP charges $270 for a 160GB ssd for example and you can bet it's most likely NOT the blistering fast Intel model that can be had for the same price online.

What's your main reason for wanting an SSD in this machine?

Speed, instant on/off. Save on battery life.

Yeah I spent a few weeks deciding what I wanted to do.

I was VERY tempted to just put a cheap drive in my MBP...sell it and buy a loaded 11" MBA with the "black friday sales" macmall had them at like 200 off also.

In the end, I just bought a SSD drive and a Time Capsule.

Personally I am not going the SSD route until 1TB reaches the realm of affordability..... I keep a lot of media files on my PC (transferred my ENTIRE DVD collection to digital format)

Yep, swapped a 256 GB SSD into my Macbook Pro, I love it. Combined with the i7, this thing flies!

Battery life is not a reason. I thought this as well and just learned yesterday that it's not true: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...tery,1955.html

You don't do SSDs for storage, you do it for system files for the read/write speed. SSD for your system drive, platter drive for your media.

It's not a hoax, it allows a smaller platform battery to be used in the device. I see Apple using smaller batteries than other companies using regular drives and getting more battery life.

Tom's has always done some great tests, but I'm looking at it just as I stated.

One thing I totally lost/forgot/confused on with the MBA, it doesn't use SSD, it uses flash memory as the iPods, iPhones and iPads. Thus giving it better battery life, I kept looking at "normal" laptops that replaced HDD that replaced them with SSD.

That Tom's article was done on early gen SSDs, they've since fixed whatever issue was leading to higher than expected power usage in later model SSDs.
