I'd go with HP. I have had a HP home PC for about a year(with AMD XP1800,DVD burner,512 mgs of ram,80 gig hard drive and 64 mg video card). other than a optic mouse going bad(knock on wood) it's been VERY good.and when i called them about the optic mouse they were very quick about getting it to me. (they didn't give me crap about returning it or anything) . and i use my PC a good amount.(atleast 3-4 hours a day most of the time here on Acura-cl.com )
but WHATEVER YOU DO DON'T BUY A GATEWAY. i had a gateway before my HP. it was the worst PC i've ever had. we bought it brand new with a 3 year warrenty. and in 3 years it went through 3 hard drives,a power source, a mother board,CD-Rom unit and something else(i forget sorry). and on the last hard drive I had to threaten to take them to court cause I purchased the big warrenty and they wouldn't take my hard drive back saying i'm abusing the computer. I said look I never abused the computer it sits inside all i do with it pretty much is write college papers, surf the net, and play a game now and then. if you call that abuse that's a piss poor computer . they kept on giving me sh!t, i said look I'm calling my lawyer once i get off the phone if you don't give me the hard drive and I got the contract right here in my hand says 3 YEARS . so finally they ended up eating the cost of the hard drive but that took a good 2-3 weeks.
now Dell I don't like Dell. they don't use AMD chips(which i really like), plus I had a management teacher who bought a Dell new and she had a heck of time with Dell(she tells every class she has not to buy Dell) plus my school used to have Dells the drives would make "funky sounds" i'm like this POS is gonna blow up

That is a 1.8Ghz Celeron for $650 after rebate. How much would a comparable Pentium or Athlon cost?
Also, what programs would he not be able to run with a 1.8Ghz Celeron?
What makes the Celeron suck? It has the same architecture as the older Pentium 4 it just has less L2 Cache (256kb vs. 128kb).
