laptop problems...

my dell notebook has this problem where the cursor moves on its own... it continually goes off the screen when I'm not even touching the computer. If I try to move the cursor I can kind of, but its being pulled off the screen the whole time.

I attached a mouse and keyboard to see if it was caused by me touching the comptuer, but that didnt' help. it still does it a lot.

anyone know why this would happen?

also... when I'm running it on battery power, if I run too many programs it just shuts off. yesterday I had outlook, word, and IE open... the second I tried to open an image file it just shut off.

any advice?

Turn off the little cursor pad, and setup the battery warning to let you know it is going to turn off. You can create a battery saving profile for the laptop so it is less bright and runs slower as well.

its not from the mouse though... it happens whether the mouse is plugged in or not.

if I bang on the keyboard around the little touchscreen thing for the mouse sometimes it fixes itself, or goes to the other side of the screen... could something be pressing down on that sensor somehow?

I can turn off the cursor pad!?!

how do I do that?

and its not that the battery dies... yesterday the battery had about 97% power when it shut off. its like the cpu overloads and it just shuts off...

it should be the mouse pad yes.

See if you can disable it in Device Manager.

I might think it is a defect.

If it is the original load from Dell it should be in the system tray to turn it off.

Check to see if the fan is working, if it is not then the laptop is overheating and turning off due to that, sooner or later the MB will fry and Dell will come out to replace it.

fan is working fine, I checked that. I don't really care too much about the battery problem, this computer is going to sit on a shelf and not move so that doesn't really matter.

I just need to be able to control the cursor.

thanks for the advice...I'll try turning off the cursor pad when I get home.

You might want to have a little 30 minute wait for dell support to help.

Heard many problems with Dell laptops lately.

I read that to turn off the mouse touchpad thing I have to disable it in BIOS.

Anyone know how I change BIOS settings?
