Kodi

Not sure if anyone uses Kodi or have noticed, but it looks like the fun may be ending... or at least became a lot more difficult

idunno, this forum has always been conservative and law abiding. if these things do get talked about (pirating), it's usually off the radar.

I think it's fine as long as it's under the right context

this wasn't meant to be a tutorial... just a discussion.

especially since the legality of Kodi is under fire.
I mean, I grew up with Napster and downloading stuff and I dont view it as "stealing" but others do...but I suppose the very word "pirating" means stealing.

yeah... once it hits disc or is broadcast, IMO it's 'sharing'
there's definitely some stealing going on as well though. I watched WonderWoman over the weekend.

Supposedly there is some grey area with the way the law is written in that it is illegal to DL, but (in most cases) you are not DL'ing, you're streaming.

Frankly I don't get the purpose of Kodi. It is just a front interface, another layer to search and centralize the web media?

I gave it a try when I was looking for a replacement for Windows Media Center, no longer offered since Windows 10. I installed the recommended add-ons, but was never able to get what I was looking for.

We have no TV cable, just an antenna in the attic,. that feeds 4 TVs, 2 sound systems and 3 computers with PC tuners. I wanted to use it to watch TV and as a PVR, with local TV schedules (with automatic updates of course). For that purpose, I never found something better than Windows Media Center. Fortunately a few enthusiasts are keeping it alive.

Kodi sucks, I messed with it for a bit but it's so un-reliable. Streams are always of iffy quality and often the links are broken. I went back to just torrenting to my media server and using plex on my smart tv.

Yeah Kodi is frustrating. But how do you non-users live stream TV (PPV Sports) without it?

kodi works fine... if you have a problem, it's with whatever individual add-ons you're using.

and I agree, they can be spotty at times... but after you use them for a while, you tend to figure out what add-ons are better for different things.

I don't really stream live events though. I'll stream some shows, and I'll stream some movies I'm not sure whether I want to watch or not... but, mostly I DL a bunch of HD versions of movies/shows at the same time and then come back later and watch them off my drive.

Nah, SlingTV has an iphone app that you can Chromecast, or some SmartTV's have the SlingTV software installed as well. It does have a monthly subscription fee though but it's pennies compared to Cable.
