Thumbs up Keep your computers and cell phone in Sync - Plaxo.com

http://www.plaxo.com/

I did a search, didn't find this anywhere so thought I would post it.

I recently upgraded to AIM Triton and bundled with it (along with other crap) was this program called Plaxo. Normally I overlook all the other crap that AOHELL installs (or tries to) but this one shows quite a bit of promise.

Plaxo basically is a program that allows you to keep your contact information, tasks, calendar, and notes that you have stored in your computer and select cell phones in sync with each other automatically. In addition it works with Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird (Beta), IE (Beta), AIM, and you can even access all that info online as well. And if you update online it'll sync when you turn on your computer, or update another computer when you update a diffferent computer, etc and etc and etc...

I had my doubts when I first started using it. But when I had my sinus surgery not too long ago I was working on my wife's laptop and had a lot of updated info in Outlook that I needed to update on my own computer. Out of sheer luck I had this program installed and it did it all for me.

This program even helps keep you keep your contacts information up to date by looking to see which of your contacts use plaxo. And you decide what information of yours other contacts that use plaxo can and can't see.

There's a free membership and a premium that does a lot more. (I currently have the free and it seems to be working just fine for me).

Now that I've found it, it's my temporary workaround for needing to buy a PDA because I can keep my contact info up to date on my work computer and home computer automatically.

Ok - these are personal preferences, but here are my reasons:

I try to keep 3rd-party "conduit" type apps to a minimum, just keeps things cleaner and tidier. I don't feel Plaxo is necessary for managing contacts.

Also - Plaxo used to be compared to spyware in its early days - there was also speculation that they shared your information with 3rd parties, unbeknownst to you. They say they don't do this anymore, but who really knows. I would rather not find out. This issue particularly has left a lasting bitterness for me, in regard to Plaxo. Oh and also, I don't like the name Plaxo. I don't want anything on my computer called "Plaxo".

I am pretty wary about storing personal information on the net - be it mine or others. I have a Yahoo address book but typically I only have e-mail addresses in there. And also, I view Yahoo as a more reliable and trusted source than Plaxo, given their widespread global presence and history on the internet.

Good things about Plaxo? I suppose it could make transferring and sharing contacts "easier". I just would rather do it using different ways.

Actually the way I got it, it was bundled with AIM Triton. I think I accidentally said AOL earlier.

I don't think it comes with AOL.

Either way, basied on Srika's comments, i'm still debating keeping it or not. It still sounds like a great concept though.

I use to use it. I stopped when I realized that I was better at managing my contact information then the idiots that the update requests were sent to. These idiots (some CEOs, directors, and presidents mind you) can't follow the simple instructions in the email to update thier contact info.

After unisntalling it and fixing it all, I am done with Plaxo. Good idea, but it relies on the idiots input....
