Just got Windows XP 64 bit RC 2
This OS is stable and fast, its what Windows XP SHOULD be.
It comes with Internet Exploder 64 bit edition and Service Pack 2 features included (they work well and dont hog memory unlike 32 bit edition) I'll have to try Firefox 64 bit soon.
Now.. I have used previous 64 bit OS's including Windows but this latest is just blazingly fast, stable and runs things smoothly. Now if only I had a few more 64 bit programs that could take advantage of all this.

BTW, for anyone with an AMD64, there is a FREE CD or download link from Microsoft for this. Download Link Just thought someone in here might find this interesting.

Far Cry will soon be out with a 64 bit version for Windows.
Hell, 32-bit versions of games run faster in Win64.

Been using older builds for a while.
Games kick ass on it. Very stable for a beta OS. Half Life 2 runs great on it. The only thing that sucks is nvidia has old 64 bit drivers for it. Hopefully they will update soon.

There is jack for 64bit apps. All 32bit apps get EMULATED (translated to 64bit insturctions) though the wow32 software process. Which runs slower than running them in regular 32 bit XP. Drivers are not always up to date and have to be 64 bit, 32 bit drivers do not work on XP64.
Plugins for your 64 bit browers are about non-existant because they have to be 64bit too.
We had a XP64 thread many months ago 5-6 when it came out
64bit apps show a 3-12% speed increase. The biggest advantage of 64bit is for severs, not workstations. Biggest feat a 64bit app does is allocate more than 4GB of ram. So unless you have more than 4GB of ram and 64bit apps, running XP64 is slower and kinda pointless at the moment...
basically you end up running all 32 bit apps emulated in your 64bit O/S... and the major benefits of 64bit memory heap useless... and when you do find the 64bit app it runs slightly faster. Nothing night and day... fun to play with as a dual boot but not practical as your main O/S...

I'm well aware of the "placebo" effect, I was skeptical myself at first but I've done some "real world" tests running several of my processor intensive programs (mostly strategy games) and even SETI @ home works about 10% faster.
For what its worth I've been building my own machines since the early 1990's so I'm kinda surprised at this, pleasantly surprised as I didnt want to switch over to Linux.

I have a good system. Keeps it cool. But the AMD64 chips DO run about 30 to 40 degrees cooler than say an Athlon XP.

Might want to check the WinInformant webpage or maybe www.neowin.net
