Have had a Motorola Razr for the past 6 years and finally upgraded to an iPhone and had a couple questions (I really don't want to search through all 23819238 pages of the iphone thread.

1) Can I add my own wallpapers and ringtones from my computer to my iphone? And if so can it only be done via syncing from itunes? Or bluetooth?

2) What are the best FREE apps I should download?

3) Any other 'tips or tricks' I should know?

I got the 16gig, didn't have a need for more. I had 4.2.1 on it when I picked it up I think.

 

 

I also got thw 16 gig and 4.2.1 version. No need for me having more than 16 gigs lol.

Thanks for the suggestions. I got all my wallpapers, custom ringtones, and apps (for now) set. Just hate that you can't create custom text msg tones.

Btw my fav games have to be angrybirds and words with friends I find myself playing those two half the time at work lol

 

You've changed your entire point of reference. You're going to be getting quite a few shocks.

If you have an iPhone 4 on iOS 4.2.1, then I would not try to jailbreak it yet. The Cydia implementation is buggy on 4.2.1, and you will have to crack the file system to move a new kind of Cydia onto your iPhone directly, and I do not believe that this kind of thing is for new iPhone people. :-)

The whole idea of having to sit there holding iPhone buttons for 10 seconds here, and 7 seconds there, and that kind of thing, to get the jailbreak to work is a procedure that is going to seem scary to you.

My advice would be to wait a while before jailbreaking, to make sure you know Apple community a little better first.

If you use MobileMe, you will find that it automatically synchronise your contact lists, calendars and mail automatically. However, you can obtain applications like iDisk and Gallery in order to manipulate the FTP-like cloud storage a little better.

Some kind of free Emoji application from the App Store will allow you to send cute and expressive icons to other iPhone users.

If you are a business user, then look at getting Dropbox (at least in its free implementation) to automatically synchronise important documents between your iPhone, desktop and laptop. There is a decent version of Docs to Go that does the same thing via a non-cloud folder that you synchronise, and it has the additional advantage of having a fairly decent implementation for reading and editing documents, spreadsheets and PDF.

After you have more experience, you can go very far with jailbreaking.

But a new iPhone user can completely queer his device by fooling around with the cracking applications before he is ready. :-)

 

If Jay would restrict Cydia to just a few hosting sites, and eliminate the user's ability to manually add sites like "sinfuliphonerepo" then Apple would not be so anti-jailbreaking.

His prestige with Apple would go way up, and they'd open more doors to him. His tacit support of this kind of illegal activity is what keeps Apple away from him.

Jailbreaking is not illegal. But "sinfuliphonerepo" is illegal.

 

I do not like Opera Mini as much as some people do. (I see it was recommended by somebody.)

I think Safari is perfect for the light use you're going to have on the iPhone, but if you want something better I would recommend Atomic Web, which adds some features like tabs. I don't have any great need for a better browser on the iPhone, but for 99 cents it is worth it.

They will also allow you to download it for your iPad at no additional charge.

 

I can't stop playing words with friends...it's so addicting.

 

I thought the same thing at first, then got bored really fast with it.

Add me for Words with Friends although I haven't played in a while. I like FreeAppaDay as it push notifies you of free games everyday. That's how I got World Series of Poker for free and play it everyday
