Jumbo Frames

I have 4K jumbo frames enabled at all locations on my network running a GB switch and cards.

Writing a drive backup over the network peaking around 75% utilization:

Anyone have any real world data on benefits of 9K vs 4K jumbo frames?

Depends on if you need the latency or the bandwidth.

So smaller frames are better for transmitting small files while jumbo frames are better for bigger files?

At one of my clients I setup a virtual 9k jumbo frame network between two VMs on the same VMware server. One is the backup target for the other. It works, haven't compared it to a non jumbo frame network though.

I'm sure they're just .mp4 or .mkv files, a few hundred megabytes each and about 20-30 minutes long

I am typically dealing with 2GB to 200GB files.

Just wondering of anyone had noticed an appreciable difference in throughput between 4k and 9k frames.

I have not. In theory, 9K COULD have more CRC check errors.

Personally I don't think it's worth it in general. Yet alone 9k.

The reason jumbo frames were created was to reduce cpu overheard. Well we are beyond that restriction now, even at 1000 mbps speeds, even on our phones. Lol
