iPod video battery life
For those of you that have an iPod video, what kind of battery life are you getting out of it.
I have the 30gb and don't play any videos. I have one large playlist that is on shuffle, I rarely skip songs, and my backlight timer is set to 5 seconds.
I'm getting about 7-8 hours of song playback.
I'm curious if anyone else can provide some data points.
Thanks.

i got a 60GB and the battery isn't the best on it. the cold weather i do notice does have an affect on it though. But i'm still trying to figure out how to convert WAV files into Mpeg4's, anyone know a way that is free?

For converting, this might help:

Ignore the tivo part, it's the VLC converter portion that'll help you.

I get about 8 hrs max so far, audio only on my new 60gb video ipod.
the battery isnt as great as they claim. If i watch a law& order episode for instance, the battery drops to under half. Watch another one, and its dead. One good thing though, you can charge it for 15 minutes and you've got full battery life again.
I've watched 1-1.5 hours of video on my 30gb and it goes from full to near dead.
As for music playback, I am coming from a shitty Mini that couldn't hold 1.5 hours of charge.
Right now, I am seeing over 11 hours of playback with no use of the backlight.

for those w/ a 3G, i think i remember hearing that there was a recall on some of the batteries because they would die too quickly
i forget the details, but i remember that floating around somewhere. my 3G probably lasts a good 7-8 hours, but i rarely use it at all anymore.

I've got the 30GB and I'm only getting about 7-8 hrs. I use it on the plane when travelling for business and have yet to be able use it for both the outbound and inbound flights
Ended up having to drop $50 on the stupid charger.

Somethings people may want to take into consideration.
Yes, apple does tend to overestimate their battery life.
Now...something I am not sure of...but willing to take a guess...apple based their estimates on speicifc file types. IE AAC for music and whatever their native coding for video onthe ipod is (MP4?) And then on top of that...the size of the video files.
Just a guess, but I would presume these would have minor influences over the battery life as well?

As far as video goes....if the video file is very large, the ipod cannot cache the entire video...hence multiple times during the video it has to access the disk....which leads to more battery use.
btw...for those with gen 5 ipods...don't tag your tv show videos as tv shows.....they won't show up in your ipod because there is no TV show category in the ipod software. Apple blundered the update. They will show up under recently added.
Why did Apple offer this feature in itunes and then make it moot on the ipod is anybody's guess.
