is internet service really that slow on phones?

I was in a VZW store this weekend in PHila. to help my 75 yr old aunt renew her service.

I remember what it was like for the older folks when i was working @ at&t. Back then it seemed like it was difficult for them to understand send/end and other basics.

So, we decided on a basic flip for my uncle who never checks v-mail, texts or uses the net.
My aunt chose the env or whatever it's called. They didn't have the phone in stock and wanted to ship it to their house. They were leaving for a week and weren't going to be home to sign for it. It was decided to have it sent to my uncles business.

We didn't know the address (uncle didn't answer home phone) and the vzw employee didn't have access to the net on his computer to get it.

They didn't have a phone book, i don't have one at home either, but i should have one now that i see what problem it poses.

The sales guy gives me a netbook with the vzw internet on it and said that i could check it out on there.

The speed was piss poor, it was much slower that dial up and was of no help. While the netbook was "thinking" i was trying 3 other phones in the store.

The phones timed out half the time and really didn't get anywhere in the 20 minutes we searched. The netbook was no help either.

Is internet service really this bad on cell phones?

I don't use the internet on my phone and have it disabled so i don't hit the button and get charged.

It may have been suffering from too much data trying to go through one tower (all those phones, etc in the store). Only so much can get through a bottleneck.

But no. Normally, it's nowhere near that slow, on any network unless you are on the lowest tier (out in the hicks). EDGE on GSM or CDMA One on CDMA.

The Internet on my smartphone is fairly fast IMO.

There is a thread with mobile speed tests somewhere in this sub-forum IIRC.
