iMac Apple Care story

So I bought an i3 27" iMac in the fall of 2010. Great machine and I was loving it.

Within three months I started seeing some "stains" on the LCD. Underneath the glass. Like so...

So I took it in and they replaced the LCD panel.

Three months later..same thing. This time they replaced the LCD panel and a fan.

Three months later...same thing again. This time they replaced the LCD panel, all of the fans, and the PSU. I was told on this visit that if I purchased the Apple Care warranty, this would be the last time I took that computer out of the store for a repair.

Well 6 months later it did it again. So I made an appt for last Saturday at the Genius bar. I put in comments on the appt and said this is the 4th repair for the same exact issue, I want another unit.

Get there, they didn't even turn it on. They just pulled a new box off the shelf and had me sign some paperwork!

Upgraded to an i5, 6770 video, and Thunderbolt!

I'm happy.

yep. 3 failed major repairs = new computer. Got my new high end 15" i7 Macbook Pro this way, after exchanging a older 2007ish macbook pro with a failed logic board.

The best part is I bought the original macbook pro on closeout, and the extended warranty was expiring that month (March '11). So here I am with a machine valued over $2k that I paid $1.5k 4 years ago.

It is no wonder that Apple ranks among the highest in CS and I recommend AppleCare to all my users.

The last time I ever saw this screen (it says July on the other screen, this problem came and went until finally dying in March. Nvidia 8600 GT known failure issue):

I can't remember for sure, but if that was the 1st gen 27" I believe there was a known issue with some of the panels.

Apple is known for their customer care. Glad it worked out for you. They have gotten big enough now, that sometimes the amount of care you get depends on the person behind the bar.

^Yea. The "Genius" rep was pretty cool. Like I said, he didn't even turn on my computer. He just had faith and listened to what I put in the comments.

Funny story though, I forgot I had upgraded the ram to 12GB. (1) stock 4GB and (2) additional 4GB dimms. So I called them yesterday and thankfully they hadn't sent the machine out yet. So they pulled it for me and it's waiting for pickup.

Part of me wishes I had waited until this years new models came out. Lol

If a company stands behind its products....with great customer service....people will buy them in droves....even if they cost more than the competition.

Nope. I have been really busy, just bought a new house, moving etc. Haven't followed up on it any more.

Me too. Aside from the fact a product had to be repaired 3 times. But I can't complain now!

Yea if the panel goes out after the AC warranty I'm screwed. But I've taken these apart and replaced things myself so it won't be that big of a deal.
