I basically just need something to take notes and possibly access the wireless internet at school, and maybe a CD-ROM.

Any suggestions?

Base model notebooks start at about $700 or so, might find a better deal with rebates. Every notebook for that price are gonna have the general specs ie; celeron chip, 256MB memory, maybe cd-rw, 40gig HD, prolly wont have wireless card integrated. But as for manufactures dells are good, also I recommend Toshiba and IBM.

A> How long do you plan on using it for
B> When you use it to take notes do you plan on using it on battery power or do you have the availabilty to plug it in?
C> How much would you be able to spend Max?

If you can spend a few more bucks, look into centrino notebooks as they are better on battery life and lighter for travel. You'll be able to find them starting at about $1000 or so amybe a little more. Gateway makes a sick one with a small screen(13in I think), very lightweight. It goes for about $1150.

Gateways lightweight one is nice
as is the little Compaq

You know my recommendation though:
iBook 12"
4.8 pds
5 Hr. battery life
With airport extreme and combo drive and 512mb ram you are looking at $1,250 with tax
and if you are a student about $1,175 with tax.

I just need to use it for the time that I'm in college, and for the most part I'll be running off battery life. I have five classes that are 55 minutes apiece, and some downtime in between classes. There is wireless internet on the entire campus, but I'm not sure what my computer would need to access it. I'd really like to not spend more than $800, but I think I can stretch it to $1,000 if I work a little bit......

I was in the same position you are in. and I went on the subway diet...I mean

I bought the iBook.
I have a gateway with a 15.4 inch screen...2.4 P4, but it weighs 8 pounds. and the battery is like 2.5 hours at best, so I wanted something small and easy to carry from class to class.
