A. students are broke and can't afford to pay full price and they need the software for the class their taking.
B. if you learn how to use their software you'r more likely to stick with what you already know then switch to a new software and then they'll make their money when you upgrade.

It's just like gillette sending you the free razor in the mail on your 18th birthday!
I see.

As for razors though, I've always got free ones. I have about 3 or 4 other ones that Gillette or Schick has sent me. Never really had to buy anything.

The former is not true for photoshop.
Feel free to call adobe support - you can use 'regular' upgrades to legally update academic versions. I have done it myself, personally.

It depends on the product, but for Adobe photoshop, you aren't allowed to use the software for commercial purposes. (like getting pictures published) This isn't unlike software licenses which charge different prices for personal vs business use.

For most of us, that's no big deal.

The "... for students" is not the same as the "Academic" version. The "Academic" version is full retail version for students. I remember I used to get a full version of C++ compiler for $40 and the Visual Studio for $90. And... it is all up to the guy in the store to verify your Id. Most of the time they don't check at all.

I called Adobe and asked what the difference was....they said that when its time to upgrade...you have to pay full price....they don't offer "student discounts" on upgrades. So I guess they see it as bait to get you in as a full paying customer later on.

The upgrades are only a couple hundred dollars anyways.

Does Adobe even offer the educational versions anymore? I know they offer the discount to students and faculty, but the packaging doesn't say "Educational Version" on them anymore. Even the serial numbers used to start with "EDU" and now they don't.

My copy of Creative Suite Premium doesn't show any signs that it's not the professional version.

I don't want to stray this thread too off topic, so this will be my last
piracy comment. Feel free to make another thread if you want to continue.....

But for English songs, yes. (I'd buy tons of chinese music if there
was a itunes variant that sold chinese music......)

I never understood why people had to have 82394732947329 songs
on their ipod. If people nuked their entire collection and just rebuilt it,
legit, say, 2 songs/$2 a day legit via itunes, I think people would be
plenty happy especially after say, two weeks. Most piraters stockpile
and never listen/watch what they have anyway.

With regards to piracy, I'm more tolerant with music, because the music studios suck up almost all the money anyway, and the artists, who are the ones we care
about, get very little.

On the other hand, I have purchased some wonderful software programs,
and will never see better versions because the company shut down (presumably due to lack of sales. ). I have also seen wonderul movies that will never have sequels, or any movies similar to them, also because they didn't do 'good enough' in the box office or in dvd sales.

As a movie lover, I find it horrifying when people pirate great movies, and then go to the theater to watch crap movies. That's half the reason so many new movies are crap.

So yeah, I'm extremely anal with regards to software and movie piracy.
Deal with it.

This is technically true, but upgrades are pretty cheap.
When I bought CS2 the pricing was something like:

CS2 base version : $600
CS2 base version (academic): $300
CS2 upgrade: $150
There is no 'CS2 upgrade (academic)' for $75, but I got the CS2 upgrade to go
from CS academic to CS2 'regular'.

This is base version - I don't think the 'suite' crud is worth the $$$.

I just got the ultimate a week ago with my girls info. When you sign into the site they will ask for your school email address. They then will send a link to that address. You can access the checkout from the link in your email, and thats all there is to it.

I had to scan my student ID and send it to them as a PDF via their online form. You can also fax a copy or send it snail mail. This is through adobe.com, not sure what some of the other sites require.

i wonder if anybody really checks to see if a person is a currently enrolled student.

for those with .edu email addresses, do yours go inactive after you graduate or do you get to keep it?

With the Microsoft Office deal, the bigger issue is not whether they will check but what happens if they do. It says in the terms and conditions that you're liable for reimbursing Microsoft the > $600 cost of the software if you fail to meet their eligibility requirements.

As for the .edu email, I work in Higher Education IT and I can tell you that the answer to your question is all over the map.

Just picked up Photochop CS3 Extended and Lightroom for $379!

Nothing like a couple of community college classes to qualify you for the student discount!
