how important is digital input on lcd monitor?

I want to buy a 17" lcd today. Should I spend more to get one with digital input? I would need a new card in my computer (which I will probably do anyway).

Does digital make a big difference? I'm not a big gamer or anything.

thanks.

DVI is more clear and less distored. It's digital afterall.

If you have the means, I highly recommend getting a DVI monitor.

And considering everything is going digital, VGA will probably be failing up in the next few years.

If you're not a big gamer, you probably don't need it. And if you don't game you don't really need the sharpest resolution possible. Could help for Photoshop and such, though. Just have to ask yourself what do you do with your computer.

If you're going to get a new video card, it'll probably come with DVI, making your LCD monitor decision a no-brainer IMHO.

To me going from analog to DVI was as different as night and day. And to me the biggest advantage is in normal use of the computer, not gaming. The main advantage is readability of text - DVI is SO EASY on the eyes.. text is so damn crisp... you will love it. Also - it has much better contrast (text vs. background) compared to analog, mainly with the text appearing brighter and more vivid. Strongly recommended!

This is the one I got, but I only paid $400 as an after Thanksgiving special. I would have bought the VX900, but this deal was too hard to pass up.

Personally, I couldn't be happier with the purchase.

$400 for that Scrib? Damn thats a great deal. Maybe I'll shop around a little, I'd love to get that for $400.

What do you think of this...rated pretty good by cnet, has tv input too.

Never heard of it.

But I would NEVER EVER buy anything from MacMall. Bunch of fucking crooks.

Oh and the deal on the LCD was a one day only thing right after Turkey Day.

ok no macmall.

dell has refurb 17 inch flat panels for $328. maybe I'll just get that and spend the $500 I would save over a 19" w/ dvi on a dvd burner, hard drive, memory, and a pda.

I got both, can't really tell too much, it is generally pretty hard to tell the difference. It probably like 8x and 4x agp. It just a tad better. I compared it side to side. There isn't much difference, at least with my sonys.

Hmm i read some reviews also, people generally will agree with me that this is true in some cases. If you notice a big difference, it might be ur settings are not correct or a bad cable, etc. I like DVI because u can link like a whole bunch together on a DVI cable spliter and make a big screen. There are advantages like this to DVI, i dunno if it is because the manufactuer doesn't always takes advantage of it or it not much difference. But usually the old pro grade CRT are better generally than LCDs. But i don't like the weight and size of one.

I agree, DVI is a little more crisp but not considerably. We run very heavy graphics and I don't see much difference between the two. This is running on an Nvidia Quadro4 750XGL with dual NEC LCD 2080UX monitors, one output is VGA and the other is DVI (both are 2048 x 1536). We are switching to the 980 XGL which is dual DVI but the resolution is still 2048 x 1536 per display.

I'm running a Radeon 9700 Pro with a Dell 2000FP 20.1" LCD at its native resolution of 1600x1200 - maybe this LCD just doesn't do too well with analog input?? I don't know - the difference just seemed so striking to me...... anyways...

DVI is the shizz.....

Check the monitor specs. It might run better on a different resolution and refresh mhz. There is an optimal setting which it will look sweet.

I just got a base model Dell 17" flat panel for $328 shipped. I started looking at DVI and contrast ratios and all that shit and the prices were getting up to like $800. So I figured fuck that I could take a vacation with the difference in price so I just went and got the cheapest name brand I could find.

Dell monitors are really good. They are rebadged samsung and lite-on monitors. They are one of the best ones in the business.

I was running it at the same resolution as what I'm running DVI on - I think refresh rate is a non-issue here because that's not the problem I was having, the main difference is the crispness and brightness of the text when using DVI. I am definitely a DVI fanatic thereof.
