How to handle a crazy phone bill?

Long story short, we dropped my minute plan...I had no land line, and was using my cell phone alot, and thought I had more minutes.

I get a bill in the mail yesterday for $750

It was like 1100 minutes a .45 per minute.

The weird thing is a plan with the amount of minutes I need for that month is maybe $150 tops...

Do I have any leeway with the company? It's AT&T...

yes. call them and tell them what happened. they can usually change your plan before the bill goes into complete effect and you just pay the rate for the higher plan. if the first one doesnt help you, call them again.

tell them you want them to upgrade to the 150 a month plan so you wont go over, ask them to then waive the fees since you were unaware, if they give you a hard threaten to drop them. if they still dont give in actually drop them pay the 175 or whatever to deactivate. then get another carrier around 200 for a blackberry and plan was what i paid to get started with verizon. i hope you can work it out but if they wont then be smart 175+200= 375 thats still alot less

So you basically went over your existing plan on your allotted mins? Damn that is a lot of mins to go over by, and a rather high rate to pay per min, but I don't see what you can do, you went over so it stands to reason that you should pay up. Although it couldn't hurt to call them and ask(beg, plead) for mercy, all they can say is no.

If it was a billing error it would be a different story, but if you just went way over your minutes, not much you can really do. AT&T isn't going to care why you went over... but like Rock said, it never hurts to beg and plead. I wouldn't expect much though. You went over, they billed you accordingly... seems pretty straightforward, but still may be worth a call to AT&T...

I had something like that happen and I called Verizon, complained, bitched, lied and eventually got my bill reduced. It doesn't hurt to try...

You dropped your minute plan and thought you had more minutes? Something doesn't add up. You can't play dumb if you consciously changed your plan.

Pay your bill, throw away your phone, and get a pay as you go.

You could claim that you weren't told you'd lose your rollovers. That's probably the best leverage.

I know with Verizon if you go over your minutes one month and call in willing to up your plan, more times then not they are willing to credit you the difference of what you would of paid with the higher min plan and the overage ammount.

Mine was'nt 750 but it was a lot higher than normal. It was right after I switched to AT&T from Verizon as well as a result of the iPhone. The first months bill, minus all the crap activation fees and everything else, was way too high.
I called and complained, signed up for the unlimited, top of the line plan, (read: most expensive) and they dropped the previous bill to what the new plan cost was.
I think you can get away with this once and that's it. Calling them and playing stupid twice is a bit unbelievable. Unless you're Water-S that is.

You lose your rollover minutes anytime you change plans. It's in the terms and conditions. As others have said you can try to plead with them, but there isn't much ground you can stand on. Nonetheless, good luck.

Rollover Minutes: Rollover Minutes accumulate and expire through 12 rolling bill periods. Bill Period 1 (activation) unused Anytime Minutes will not carry over. Bill Period 2 unused Anytime Minutes will begin to carry over. Rollover Minutes accumulated starting with Bill Period 2 will expire each bill period as they reach a 12 bill period age. Rollover Minutes will also expire immediately upon default or if customer changes to a non-Rollover plan. If you change to non-AT&T Unity plans with Rollover Minutes (including the formation of a FamilyTalk plan) any accumulated Rollover Minutes in excess of your new non-AT&T Unity plan or the primary non-AT&T Unity FamilyTalk line’s included Anytime Minutes will expire. Rollover Minutes are not redeemable for cash or credit

Ive always been able to get AT&T to adjust my bill when a crazy one came in. I have a family plan with mine and my fiance's phones on it, so I cant always keep track of what shes doing, one month her minutes skyrocketed, I called them, up and upped my plan and they backdated it. Same for when she suddenly started texting and didnt tell me she was so I could put a plan on it.

Call them up and Im sure that if you upgrade your plan they will backdate it for you
