It's going for about $100-120 on Ebay right now. 5gb with internal rechargable battery, color screen and can hold and display photographs.

I want to use it during workouts. It would also be nice if it could some pictures and video.
I have about 1000-3000 songs but i don't intend to put all my music in the MP3.
I've seen some creative models that I really like but they're bulky and I always see the Creative brand refurbished at Fry's.
1gb Nano for jogging (if you are running you might want a flash based drive)
Rio Carbon for everyday shit (I can fit more then enough music on 5 gigs)
Ipod vid is tempting but I can't see really needing unless you have a lot of down time away from home.

btw...another vote for an iPod.
Been using them forever (2G 10 GB/Shuffle 512MB/5G 30 GB). Couldn't be more pleased with the new ones. Defintely get a hard case. Agent18 cases are pretty good.
If you're only gonna be using it for exercising, get a nano. Otherwise, I'd go with a video.
Edit:
This is in comparison to the other mp3 players I've owned:
Diamond Rio MP500 (1st mp3 player evar! Bought it after Diamond won the court case.
)Creative Nomad II

That 30 buck replacement plan. I said, he guys, my battery isn't holding a charge. BOOM, mail it in, 2 weeks later 315 dollar waver... Ipod video. Anyway, now my screen is broken, so I gotta bitch some more.
I was reading reviews of audio quality in some magazine, and Ipod Nano was second for its "group," but came first in functionality, looks, etc.

I'm in the same boat. I just got a BMW, I did not opt for the cd changer, so I have a single disc cd/mp3 player in dash. I was thinking about just getting an ipod, putting all of my car CD's on it and leaving it in the car the whole time so we don't have to fiddle with the discs. Not sure what to get, was thinking to just get a nano and call it a day. I'm going to be getting a "DIce" Ipod integration kit for the car, it allows full compatibility with the stereo controls and display, as well as the steering wheel controls (Click)
So I guess Nano is the winner? Also, any suggestions on where to get them cheap? eBay?

That one looks sweet. I was thinking about that one.

I've been more then happy with my 4 gig Ipod Nano. It holds enough music for 4 days of 24 hour use. It's really small. It's simple to use. It replaced my old school Sony CD diskman.
I have no need for anything bigger, or the need for pic & video's.

They don't even care if its expired. I used my medical school ID card. They couldn't find it in the system so they just put it in by hand.

I bought a 30gb ipod tonight. Tried using my wife's college ID, but their promo for 10% off an ipod is done. The new promo is, college kids buy a mac, get a nano for free....

When you go to www.apple.com and click on store go to the bottom right corner or the side bars. You should see "Education." This will take you to the page where you can access the Education Discount.
What you are looking is the Back to School special for students.

the sansa e200 series is one of the best out there. look at cnet's review of it, they loved it. It goes up to 6 gigs.
Microsoft's "Argo" / Xbox wireless portable media player

Supposedly this is it...or it will look VERY close to this.
Alleged that it will be wireless, 4:3 aspect ratio screen (roughly 3.5 inches wide), will play music, videos, & games....and to top it off it will fully integrate into the Xbox 360.
Microsoft is supposed to also launch their own version of an "iTunes" type media store/software.
