HDD Testing

I have two SATA drives configured in a desktop as a RAID0 (motherboard chipset controller, not hardware), and occasionally on boot the array fails. I open the computer case, stare at the drives, touch the cables, reboot and usually everything is ok on next reboot.

YES the array is backed up nightly. I need RAID0 for read/write speeds and cannot afford a 2TB SSD to replace it.

I am currently running Seatools on the drives in windows GUI, but it sees both as a single volume, etc. Is there a way to test each drive independently to see if one is failing without un-building the array?

I would rather not have to restore a full backup and then 6 incrementals.... (I guess I could just wait until the next FULL)

Go to BIOS, switch drives to AHCI, test, switch back?

I don't believe you'll loose any data or have to reinitialize the array...

When I had on board issues with an SSD RAID 0 array the Intel Rapid Storage tool was telling me about it, it sees them individually.

Check that

also if you have Intel SSDs the SSD toolbox is really good.

I think they are regular sata drives. The SSD comment was about maintaining that level of speed. I think.

They are spinning platter drives.

Stunna, that link to the RST driver, but I don't necessarily want to install the driver. Just want to be able to check each drive for errors.

OK, hdd guardian allows SMART testing for individual drives behind a Intel matrix controller...

https://code.google.com/p/hddguardian/

Scanning drive 0 now.

I believe it also installs the RST tool that runs at startup as well. I dealt with it recently and it told me which of the drives was failing and why.

Drive 0 ran extended self test for an hour or so and no errors...

Wondering if it really is a loose cable... This is the second time it has happened, and both times it eventually cleared up after I opened the case and removes/re-attached the drive cables.

agreed on both counts

If I wasn't indexing 10s of GBs of data to the RAID0 right now, I would switch them to AHCI and test individually. May need to wait for the weekend.

Anyone know of a good, recent source of AFT chart/comparison for various hard drives?

Thinking of using 5x Seagate SV35 (2TB) in a raid5 box that currently has 1TB drives but wanted to know if there was something proven to be more reliable without much more cost. Not going Constellation due to cost. According to Newegg reviews, the China manufactured sv35s appear more prone to failure than the Thailand ones (anecdotally).

I didn't know that what you were asking for even existed though it sounds like something I'd like to see if you find one...

Not sur eif you are familiar with BackBlaze (I want to build one of their pods!) but they have a bit of general failure info here: http://blog.backblaze.com/2013/11/12...k-drives-last/

Not the "per vendor" "per model" breakdown I was looking for but still, they use a shit ton of drives so I expect their experiences are going to be the average...

Yes I have heard of Backblaze and their server pods. Thanks for the link, the charts and graph really spoke to me.

Yeah 5-6 years is about the avg life span in my experience.

Knock on wood, but I've never had a hard drive fail when it's (or it's PS has) been plugged into a quality UPS....

In fact, I can't remember the last time I've had a hard drive failure (but I replace my main desktop computer and laptop about every 5 years or so).

My new NAS will be interesting to watch. 4 x WD 4TB Red drives in a Lenovo IX4-300D (5 year replacement warranty on the drives). This one will be in use for much longer than 5 years....
