Hard Drive Recovery Question
Hard Drive Recovery Question
Well ive been working for days straight on outlines for school, and my hard drive unexpectedly just completely crashed and died today.
I have a dell, i turn on the machine, it doesnt load at all and then comes up with an internall hard drive failure, i run he diagnostics and get code error 2000-0164. ends up to be a hard drive read failure.
Anyways is there any chance i could recover the files if i put the hard drive in a 2.5 inch enclosure and try to run it as an external hard drive?
The hard drive makes basically like no noise now when i try to boot up. I heard to put it in the freezer, so i did that and it didnt work lol.
Help? im devstated losing days worth of work with finals coming up

Damn, I'd say :ibstogie: but he got teh ban for a month. Actually putting it in a freezer isn't a bad idea, but I here you've got to do it the right way. Stogie or Whiskers said you need one of the desilicate(sp?) bags to soak up the moisture. Basically you put the HD in a ziplock bag with one of the desilicate bags and IDK what else.
Do you have a backup? This is why you backup.
Try connecting the drive to another computer and accessing it as an external drive.

You don't need an enclosure, just make sure it doesn't touch anything it shouldn't. You can, since it's temporary, just wrap with something (like cloth, or paper), and use a rubber band or tape to hold the paper on till you are done.
If it's corrupt, but runnable, you can extract things via sector scanning. If the drive isn't spinning, then that's a lot more trouble.

check the firmware, you might have fallen under the bad firmwares in seagate hard drives issue.
i still need to call up seagate to get them to let me send it to i365 (or whatever its called) for free data recovery.

i dont feel vibrations..when i turn the pc on..i hear a sound not a ticking noise, just like air or a fan from the hard drive. as it tries to boot for like 2-3 seconds if i put my ear real close i hear a small amount of ticking as if it like tries to do something, then immediately no more ticking and just air and the fan.
can you feel any gyroscopic type movments or whatever, it so then its spinning.
its like that one toy where you pull the cord and it spins like crazy and if you try to move it in your hand, its kinda funny feeling (dunno if this makes sense)

I would buy one of those connectors that allow you to hook up the drive outside of a computer without having to actually buy an enclosure. This is what I'm talking about:

That way you can hook it up to a friends computer and see if you can get to your files, or simply get your computer up and running with a new hard drive, then use this same adapter to transfer the files back onto your computer, assuming that of course that works.

Sly Raskals advice is prob best. It doesn't sound like youre going to be able to get that drive up and running again. You may be able to still recover the data from it, but you will need another computer and the proper cable to do that.
Damn sounds like you put hours of work onto the HD. If you're desperate, consider taking the HD to Best Buy, they were able to extract info off my crapped out WD external HD (which was my backup for my Optiplex).
Backing up the backup HD, WTF?

It's a seagate hard drive. like I said they are having firmware issues with their hard drives. Check if the firmware falls under the effected drives. If it is and it's still under warranty call up seagate they will recover the data and send you back a working drive with you data intact like nothing happened.
If you go into the bios does the HD show up at all there?
Btw if it's the firmware issue what is happening is that during a power cycle the drive gets stuck in a constant read cycle and has no way to get out of it. Aside from hacking into the firmware. It's something like that.
