Hard drive/partition/PS3 transfer data question

I bought a 320GB Western Digital hard drive because I want to put it in my PS3. I have an external harddrive set to NTFS. My understanding that I've confirmed with other PS3 owners is that the PS3 only recognizes FAT32 external drives. This is relevant since I have to transfer my data to an external from my 40GB PS3 drive which will then transfer to my new 320. The external however has several GBs used with pics, music, no vids over 4GB, and some pr0n. I read on the MS page that you have to format a drive to go from NTFS to FAT32. I only need 40GB of space in FAT32 since that is the size of my PS3 drive. Rather than transfer my data on the external to the laptop, format the external, and then converting it to FAT32; isn't there a way to just make a 40GB partition of free space (I have like 100GB available) and convert that partition to FAT32? FYI I have Windows7. Oh and is the 32GB partition rule still in effect as I"ve heard of software that helps. Sorry for length and lack of paragraphing.

Since I have Windows7 do you all think this will work?

It says quick format but is that only for the partition needed? Note no 32GB limit.

Yes. Type "disk management" into the Windows 7 search box and open disk management. With your external drive already connected find it on the list and right click on the NTFS partition and choose "shrink partition" then shrink it by 40gb or 40000MB and then take that new unallocated space and use this program to format it since you can't format at drive over 32GB as FAT32 in Windows.

Thanks Stunna. This means the other data outside of the 40GB partition will remain untouched correct?

I didn't opt for the faster speed because I figured we really didn't need it thus the cost. But I was more worried about the heat.
