Ouch....data recovery and affordable don't go hand in hand. Try getting a new HD, install your OS, then set up the old one as a Slave and see if you can pull data off of it.

There are a ton of online data recovery companies. You may want a local company for liability reasons. Prepare to pay 500+ for recovery.

Here's a suggestion that may sound funny, but has worked for me in the past. Put the faulty HDD in your freezer for about 25 mins. Take it out and put it back in your system and try booting it again. If it works, start moving data immediately.

At CompUSA we do data transfers for like $60. I think you can have then transfer the data via DOS, not sure though.

Yeah, I think he's fucked. I had the same problem(clicking HD), and not even spinrite could save it.

before you throw it away, at least take the magnets out. They make nice refridgerator magnets.

you could try finding an EXACT same drive as the one that crashed that WORKS and then transferr the platters that contain data into the new drive.

Its worked before... BUT IT MUST BE THE SAME MODEL DRIVE!!!!

the refridgerator/freezer technique has been known to work also.
