Google Music Beta

Not sure if most of my collection is legal either
I think Google rides the RIAA's jock... every since they took over youtube you have videos with disabled audio and getting taken down because of copyright claims and other BS. Dunno if I want to give it a try.

I thought I read that somewhere too - I read that the whole beauty of this concept is that the music is already out there (and thusly no need for you to upload it AGAIN), so all it has to do is match the songs in your library with the songs that are already out there, and voila, your online library.

A new report has emerged offering details on Apple’s cloud music offering. Citing people briefed on the talks between Apple and the major music labels, Bloomberg reports that Apple will be able to scan customers’ digital music libraries in iTunes and quickly mirror their collections on its own servers, replacing low-quality songs with higher quality versions, after which users will be able to stream their songs and albums directly to their devices. According to the report, users will be able to store their entire music collections in the cloud—including songs that may have been obtained illegally, giving the music labels a way to earn money on pirated music through whatever fee Apple plans to charge. The report claims that the labels are negotiating aggressively to ensure they make a profit from the shift to the cloud, as it may be the last opportunity to stem piracy and dropping sales. Apple has already signed deals with three of the four major labels for the service, and is said to be close to reaching a deal with the final holdout, Universal Music. Apple could announce its cloud music service as early as its Worldwide Developers Conference, which begins with a keynote address on June 6.

was accepted into the beta, but not seeing any reason to use it...I do use Amazon's Cloud storage, but that's because I buy all my music from them and it's saved to the cloud player first...
The only way I'll find any of these useful is if they allow me access all my music (60+ gigs), preferably without having to spend hours uploading everything. Lala.com purchased by Apple provided this exact functionality, so I'm hoping to see it with 'iCloud'

Been slighty painful getting my music neat.
I'm a little crazy. I need all songs, artists, and albums perfectly organized. I had it this way in iTunes, but the import into GM messed up some of the organization and it being web based slows down the process.
Wasn't that bad though.

Got mine but using it on an iPhone browser sucks. For some reason it cut off at the end of one song. Then when I wanted to scroll down to see my other albums it won't. This is no different than the Audiogalaxy app except the app is iPhone friendly. I'll see if it works at work since we block a lot and use ie7.

NIN's creative director (Rob Sheridan) posted this on Twitter...
I wonder how iTunes Match matches your ripped songs. Name only? Length? Could you use dummy blank MP3s to get 18 million songs for $25?

I already posted that issue in the iPhone thread.
Also there is a limit of how many songs you have in iCloud. 20,000.
But who knows the details. We shall see what apple posts.
I'm sure there are restrictions since the record companies actually signed with apple.

So once it's downloaded to all devices there won't be a need for a data connection.

What's more, Apple has also announced a complimentary iTunes Match service that will let you put your existing collection of ripped CDs in the cloud. That's done by scanning your library and matching songs to the versions Apple already has (a DRM-free 256kbps AAC file) rather than uploading everything -- a process Apple notes takes "minutes," not "weeks" -- although songs will be uploaded in cases where there is no match. It will run you $24.99 a year (for up to 25,000 songs, apparently), and promises to give you all of the "same benefits as music purchased from iTunes" when it launches sometime this fall.

From what I understand the way iCloud works is that you buy it on your phone or pc or whatever and then it syncs to the cloud and auto downloads the songs to all devices. Pending a data connection.
So once it's downloaded to all devices there won't be a need for a data connection.

I think iCloud won't be streaming and yes it is kinda counterintuitive especially on a device without expandable memory. So you really don't have full access to your playlist unlike Amazon and Google unless Apple is hiding something. At least with Google Music, you can pre-download songs to your device if you don't want to stream them. Still interested in that blank MP3 idea though. If that works, then Apple will have a big fight with piracy on their hands cause I don't see that sitting well with the music industry. Then again, they can probably subpoena your information.

It's a cloud so yeah you'll need the data. If you d/l it to your phone you'd have to delete it. I think it'll work where once they scanned your iTunes, it'll give authorization to that song via the iCloud server. Jobs kept reiterating that the song had to be in iTunes so I'm guessing it won't recognize non-iTunes songs. That's the only way to avoid uploading your collection. It scans the tag or whatever it's looking for and boom you have access. I don't think you can physically d/l the AAC file without purchasing it from iTunes.

thats what I'm thinking also, iCloud is used to dl everything to all devices not store it in the cloud and stream it. Its gonna do the same for pics and videos also I think. So essentially people who have tons of music and dont want to use up so much space, google and amazons would work a lot better. Putting 20,000 songs on a phone is a waste of memory. Google's way will work better IMO
Apple is limiting users to 5GB for non-iTunes purchased content. So basically 5GB for everything, including e-mail and app data. That's not that much when you factor music in. Gmail alone gives me almost 8GB of cloud storage. Plus, 20,000 songs.

But do you know if theres a way to automatically sync photos taken from your phone to the picasa web albums??I know if I do it manually it will show up, but what about automatically.
