DELL switches back to Windows XP
Bowing to user demand, Dell (DELL) announced yesterday that it has gone back to offering PCs with configured with Windows XP rather than Microsoft's (MSFT) new Vista operating system. Vista is still an option for customers who prefer it.
"We heard you loud and clear on bringing the Windows XP option back to our Dell consumer PC offerings," Dell said on its Ideas in Action page.
In a statement last week, Microsoft said such a move is normal after a new operating system comes out, according to CNET News. Apple (AAPL) suffered similar resistance in the switch from OS 9 to OS X, but unlike Vista, OS X offers a mechanism for going back to "classic" mode.
Microsoft has said it will stop selling Windows XP to major PC manufacturers by January, 2008.

I thought this might happen. From what I've heard, the "minimum system requirements" that Microsoft was listing for Vista were way off. If anyone got a bare-bones PC with Vista on it, it was slow as hell. They'll probably just revise the minimum specs and try again.
is there anyway to get xp on machines that came preloaded vista? for free? They both have 1gb of ram and still slow as shit and freeze all the time -- I think they just replace blue screen of death with simpler frozen screen. XP on those machines will fly.

Oh well. SP1 here we come. XP was (relatively) slow compared to w2k when it first launched too. It still is IMO. I just think that consumers are purchasing better boxes than before. Remember, XP lauched when a 1 Gig processor with 512 RAM was a decent system.
Ever since I was buying computers in the late 80s / early 90s ... I've always ordered computers with twice the RAM as what the 'mainstream' computers had during 'the day'. For instance, most computers today come with 1gig of RAM -- I would order 2gigs of RAM (minimum). Whether or not I splurge on the RAM that matches the faster bus would probably boil down to what I'm using the computer for. If it's my personal computer, then it's a definite
Someone else's ... then I might opt out and save the $100 or so.
(Edit: Macs with the Intel Duo Core run fine with 512 meg RAM ... but I opted for 1 gig to make sure!)

Microsoft has always had a problem with their published minimum specs for their new OS's. Doubling the RAM from the minimum is always a good idea, for starters.
My parents are still working on a PC with Windows ME, bought in 2001. The thing is ancient. I've been trying for about a year to get them to buy a new PC, but they're resisting. Microsoft has even stopped providing security updates for Windows ME, and Norton no longer supports it either. They're thinking about just upgrading to XP, but I'm not sure if their PC can handle it. What should minimum specs be for XP? I'm just afraid it will slow down their machine too much.

I would see people ranting about certain products not having vista drivers as well, I just use the XP drivers...works fine. Meh I don't see the problem.
Then again I think they should have made versions for business less glossy and pretty and geared more towards applications, then again that is essentially XP
My wife's new Toshiba came installed with Vista Home Premium and it runs slow (and her laptop has better specs then mine). I think it may be because of Aero (my laptop's card can't do Aero). I may turn it off on hers...

I have Vista Home Premium on my Dell E1705, 1.73ghz Core Duo, I initially ordered it with 1 gig of ram, the computer froze a few times under light loads, I promptly ordered 2gb of ram, it's running just fine now. A friend (computer techie) says that he feels 4gb is the magic number for Vista..
running Vista Enterprise on a C2D 2.0 with 2gb RAM
Aero and everything runs smoothly, the real problem is with Dell...
there's this buzzing noise that comes out of the machine that drives me nuts. I don't think it's just this machine either because I have 2 other identical laptops all with the same thing.

I just purchased a Dell E1505 with the T5600 chipset and 2 gig of ram. Vista Home Premo works great, but I don't see alot different from Windows 2000 Pro.
I still think MAC has PC's number, but I can't justify twice the price.

Configure a desktop and/or laptop exactly (or close to) the same... It shouldn't be anywhere near 2X. Most times, it's just a couple hundred bucks or so.

Good thing our image is XP even if our new comps come pre-loaded with Vista.
