can someone quickly sumarize the difference between the 2200, 9300, 6000, and 700m? Just size? I'm not seeing much difference
Also, what's the overall best one for general use/desktop replacement?

for as cheap as it is, its such a headache. spend the extra $ and get a VAIO or Voodoo, etc.
i remember i got the big ol 9100 from Dell last year, had the same specs as a VAIO, but was $1800 instead of $2400. weighs like 11 friggin pounds, and ive already spent close to the price diff. in repairs and bullshit.

9300 is a desktop replacement (17" screen), but heavy. 6000 (15" screen) is nice, few friends of mine have it, but you MUST get the 9 cell battery or you will hate it. I have the 700m and love it (12 inch screen). They are all good machines, people here seem to be hating them. On my dell D600 a couple keys fell off, I called support spent about 10 minutes on the phone and the next day I had a new keyboard... their support is excellent - people seem to have problems with them, but I never have.
internal wireless internet card blew twice. computer completely froze another time and had to be taken in. i had extended warranty, but they fucked me on it. so i got my money back on the warranty and a free dell "ipod" which also broke the second day i got it. so now i have another one of those too.
i just hate dell, mkay

Ok, in the laptop / PC world, there is little difference between vendors a far as hardware goes (there used to be exception, such as Acer, etc, but they evened out). They mostly share the same components. At the end of the day pick one that fits your budget, has the size and weight you want and has the specs you want.

Just to clue you guys in, Dell does not manufacture their own laptops, they buy from large Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) in Taiwan and customize them to their own specs.
So even though their desktop PCs are sound, which they do manufacture mostly by themselves, the laptops may not.

Dell warranty means dick. Their support people are about as stupid as they can find. Once you determine on your own that there is a problem, since their support people aren't smart enough to troubleshoot, they will refuse to fix anything. I had to go through the better business bureau and two different state attorney generals before I was offered ANY kind of refund on a completely warrantied computer that Dell refused to fix. The problems were a bad hard drive that FAILED diagnostics and a fan that broke causing a severe heating problem that melted all paint off the bottom. This computer was only 8 months old. The stupid support woman even told me to put the computer on the desk and not my lap, as it is no longer called a laptop and the heat problem will no longer be a problem. That was her fix. Again, stay away from Dell. You WILL get screwed with them. It is not a matter of if, it is a matter of when.

Never had that problem..... although before they attempt to troubleshoot I shoot them down by saying I am a technician and I know what is wrong and they do what I say... why not go to a manager if you are having problems with them?

extended at home warrantee, which costs like $200 or something
=
you being put on hold for a few hours, multiple times. dick around on the phone for another 10 hours. and then IF, IF your lucky, they will finally send someone to your house
the whole process is BS

i feel the same way, AudiS4. it disgusts me everytime i open my laptop. i truly want to throw it out the window just knowing the aggrevation ive gone through with it in terms of repair and bullshit tech support
That really baffles me... lol.
Maybe people should buy from the small business section of dell, I have to admit for my computers that I buy from the home and home office section - if i need support, it takes a little longer hold time (nothing as drastic as what you guys are describing).
On the other hand, for my computer that i bought from small business, i wait at MOST 5 minutes on hold..then I get competant support reps (who speak clear english for those of you who can't understand the thick accent of the indians that they route the calls to)

I got my 600m last fall and love it. Zero problems. Weighs next to nothing (4-5lbs).
And why complain about the weight of the computer... you knew that prior to purchasing.

I've always had good experiences with Dell. I had a CRT monitor die on me. They overnighted me a new 19" CRT and included a shipping label for me to send the broken one back to them.
Meh
